Have a 2007 K9, bike has 1750 miles. Just bought bike.
One day the speedometer works and the next it don't.
When ignition is turned on it displays the pulse and moves the needle to 50 mph. Got any ideas? Would like to keep speedometer. I like them better than digital.

Thanks

do you keep the battery on a tender? back in '07, the problem was pretty common so the factory came up with an EHC flash that would re-start the speedometer after the bike was running. the reason being, while cranking the bike, the voltage would dip down enough for the speedo to lose it's information and not work. it was common enough that they issued a service bulletin. yours must not have had it done, and now that flash is not available any longer. this alone is enough reason to keep the bike on a tender when you are not riding.

Think you might be right.

The other day when the speedo worked I had it on the battery tender the night before. Today it was not. Got it on the tender now, will check it out tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Running me crazy

Charged battery last night and left on tender. Today first run Speedometer or odometer didn't work. Tach works fine. Road about 20 miles, speedometer never did work. Went back out this evening and it worked just fine. Stopped and BS'd with some friends and speedometer not working again.

Thought about shooting it. Acts like a loose wire some place.

Any ideas????:bang:

Speedometer problem

Mine does same exact thing and mines a 07 k-9 when I got it he had it on a tender so sounds like I need that flash too.. If I switch to a Dakota digital will it work with no problems or will that not fix the problem?

Have you tested your speed sensor?

I own a 2004 Big Dog Chopper with 30k miles and going strong. Did the Wire Plus ECM change out, its all great. But my speedo needle intermittently works and then the needle falls to zero no matter what speed. It seems to happen at higher rpm, maybe vibration oriented? I'm thinking speedo sensor? RPM indicator is mostly perfect though once in a great while it will simply not work. Restarting the bike cures it every time, which doesn't happen often. Any coments or suggestions out there?

Question... On occasion mine will do the same thing.. 08 K9... From reading on how the speedo does it sweep, when you start it and it pulls enough draw off the battery below a certain point, as stated above, the Speedo doesnt work because it doesnt do a 2nd sweep..

Have you tried riding down the road when it doesnt work. Stopping for a second, turning it off, then firing the bike back up and seeing if the speedo registers again.. This is what I have done when I encounter that issue and it picks back up and registers...

My 08 will not register miles or work the speedo at times. I too think its a voltage thing when cranking. If I tender it, it works. If its not on a tender for over a week or so, I have to start it twice for it to function. I have checked my battery voltage the last few times with out a tender and its 12.6 volts. Not sure how low the cranking voltage needs to drop to cause the problem? The Battery may be on the edge too. I suspect if the battery is starting to loose its cranking power a bit it will cause issues.

I gave up on my speedo looong time ago.... the fucker gets stuck at whatever speed I am doing when I go WOT... if I go up on rpms nice & slowly its fine but if I go WOT real fast it just stops working... the needle that is, the tach and the counter work just fine.

Maybe one of these winters I decide to open it up..........

thing about giving up on your speed is that you have no semi-accurate way of knowing when to do maintenance or when you need more fuel. just saying.

Easy way to tell if its had the flash is the speedo will cycle twice when you start the bike up

I had the same problem but also had the updated flash, with that being said, when you go to start the bike let the speedo do its thing/sweep first before hitting start. I found before I had it flashed, if I waited to hit start it was ok.
And yes the reflash will cycle the speedo twice.

BUT, when i and Shane were in daytona at carl's and Jason was there doing the flash, there was a problem with some of the EHCs that would not let them be flashed. a sort of corruption in the EHC itself. go figure, neither Shane nor I could get the re-flash, so we still have the single sweep.

When the dealer tried to do my reflash the first time, he said he couldn't do it because the EHC would not take it, they then ordered a new EHC and installed it and flashed it, but that was all done under warranty back in 07'/08'. My dealer told me it was an improved EHC to be able to accept the flash.
I wonder if any of the dealers would still have this? meaning the flash

That's what happened to me Franco, I opened it up a little and it went dead! No speedo, tach or milage counter, turn signals kept working fine though! Rode a while and it came back on, went off again, back on, fucker is got a mind of it's own, and it does do a double sweep, probably just a short somewhere.

Shit! Didnt realize this was such a big issue. Mine is starting to act funny as well. It will get stuck only when I hit high RPMs.

Curtis,
How do you check the spedo sensor?
