I was in Daytona for bike week. And spoke to BDM and they said if you have the usb they could flash the ehc. I have had this issue for a while. And like I told them ,I keep the battery on a tender. So its the ehc or the speedo .Try calling them . They know about the problem

thanks, i will give them a call. my warranty runs out in june. my bike does not have the usb connection, and it is an 08 mutt. i can see why people are using an alternate ehc, and wiring methods. i already replaced the voltage regulator, andnow the speedo has acted up. i replaced the vr at my own expense because i didn't want to haul it to the dealer.
Many threads here on this subject. The EHC update fixes the issue of a weak battery. The speedo needs to power up and when you start the bike the battery is drained when you hit the starter with the lights on and all. The EHC update will cause the speedo to shut down and power back up after the bike is started when full power is available. Look in the How To section and I have a video of this and the different EHC's.
Everyone that has the USB connector on their EHC should have the flash done. You know if it's done when after the bike starts up the speedo does it's sweep to 60 and back again.

Ray I had them "flash" the speedo a few months ago - the needle does not go back to sixty after startup and full power restored like yours in the video. If I take off easy and remain relatively easy up to 45 mph the speedo works great. If I launch it from a light the needle just drops and lays on the bottom of the display. If you ease it up to 45 mph and then get on it it reads fine. Of course the bike shop had never heard of "flashing the speedo" till I told them about it.

Humm, sounds like you may have a wire coming loose. Several members here have pulled them apart and found a broken wire inside the unit. They just solder it back on and it works fine. I would also check the connections inside the bucket and ensure they are tight. Fill them with die-electric grease while you are at it. And check you transmission sensor and clean it too. Hope this all works for you otherwise you may have to get another speedometer. Autometer sure dropped the ball on this unit if you ask me with all it's issues!

I checked out the video, and it was very interesting. I can understand the process, but why would a electronic device such as the ehc require, or be so sensitive to voltage. Generally the microcomputer, which the ehc is, requires very little voltage and current. As I had mentioned earlier, my bike is a 2008, and has the old style serial connector. Obviously they changed to the USB style for a reason. Why are they still using the old style ehc in a 2008 bike, or did they just start using the usb on a new improved version of the ehc. What year did the change of ehc's start? The more I read about the electrical problems, the more confused I become. There is so much info on the forum in so many different catagories. I am used to working with electronics as I have many years of experience with computers, test gear, and digital electronics. A lot of this seems to make very little sense in how it is applied, and how it is repaired. Is the BDM engineering that poor, or is it the purposeful ignorance of the company?

I have a 06 K9 and when BDM replaced the EHC in late 06 or early 07 (can't remember) they install the newer EHC with the USB. Have not had any problems since then. Wonder why 2008 bike would have the older style also.

My 07 K9 had the USB on it, and that was the original. Course I sold that bad boy and bought the WP!
I think the BDM EHC was just over thought, over engineered....

I too have a 08" Mutt with a on again/off again of the odometer/speedometer. I am riding it frequently so I have not been putting it on the battery tender but will place it on the tender tonight to see if that cures it. Armad I am curious as to what you had done to yours to finally fix your speedo problem.

I have about 3200 miles on my mutt and my speedometer sometimes jumps up and down about 2 mph when I am in the 50 to 60 mph range. But when I do not look at it everything works fine. I put a new harley AGM battery in it in March and it has not been on a tender since. I ride it about 2 or 3 times per week.

All I have done is place my battery on the battery tender if it sits overnight. Eventually I will probably get a new high capacity battery.
