Speedo Freezing

My speedo froze up on me this weekend when I brought my bike home from the dealers. I made a stop along the highway to get gas, and once I headed off, I noticed my speedo wasn't working ...the needle just rested at the 8PM position, and I also tried to push the button to see the odometer and no response....my concern is it failed record about 12 miles before I got home. Got home waited about an hour, and it was still frozen. The next day I tried again, and the speedo was working and is still thus far working (keep my fingers crossed). My concern is my odometer failed to record about 20 miles, than the current mileage. Has anyone ever have this happen to them? If this topic has been done to death, please ignor this post as I will find try and find one from a previous post.

Turn the key on and wait for it to cycle through before starting, if you dont it will freeze up....

Yeah, I'm usually pretty good with that...I usually give it a good 5-8 sec once I turn the key. Although anyting is possible...

mine does it sometimes - I just turn the bike back off at the key and start again and that puts it right - apparently the most likely cause is the battery - even if your battery shows no other symptoms, the drain on it from starting can cause this to happen

Good point Lee and one more case for keeping it ON a battery tender.

I'll give that a try next time it happens (hopefully never)...shut the bike down and restart it. Almost sounds like I'm calling tech support, "did you try turning off you computer and turning it back on...:lol: "

Mine will do the same thing if I don't wait for it to reset. This is the problem that the EHC update is supposed to fix.

You should have the newer USB EHC. You need to get to the dealership and get the EHC software updated. Its a voltage and CCA problem

Sun... did you say that the CB was broke or just popped?

It could have been very easy for the said pigtail being chewed up to cause it to pop.

The CB was totally up-graded to a glass something as I understand it...so it was broken. Yeah, I'm beginning to see how fragile electricity is on this bike.....

No I believe it was changed out to the fuse as part of the voltage regulator recall

I don't have any mechanical knowledge and I don't care too...I enjoy riding my bike, not teetering with it.

The term is tinkering. Teetering would be what your bike would be doing on that tiny little trailer you have.:lol:

I was going to start a thread about my speedo when I saw this one. My speedo worked for a few days then stopped. It hasn't work since and my odometer isn't working either. Of course I figured the odometer wouldn't work since the speedo was out. The tach does work.

Is there anything I can do other than just turning it off and trying to let it cycle though its start up mode (or whatever you call it)? Its under warranty so I can get the dealer to look at it in Myrtle Beach this weekend but I wanted to try and get it working for the ride down. Since most everyone with my dealer/service place is already in MB I can't get it done here. Any help would be great.

Jokes aside give Bill a break...I was the one who taped the wire with scotch tape.
Given the situation I personally think it was a good idea and the right thing to do..... On the road notice the chewed up cable, no tools, found some scotch tape - so tape it up and tucked it away.... The scotch tape was in order to protect the exposed wire from "earthing/sparking". This was a temporary fix given the situation – if that’s bad go ahead crucify me not Bill. Personally the only regret I have is riding WITHOUT a tool kit. Have read many posts – What’s in your tool kit – extremely helpful, just don’t like the look – again, it’s a personal thing.

Are you suggesting I get one now:lol: :lol: Like I said, don't like the way they look (personal thing) but now the big question is ..... looks or getting stuck without a kit...tough call....

No harm done, I wouldn't have changed one thing that unfolded that day, we made the best of the situation in light of my negligence with the pig-tail... ....but at least we got some riding in .
