Speedo failure

Hey guys. My father just bought an 07 k9. He's having an issue with the speedo... The needle sweeps when the bike is turned on, but doesn't rise above zero when he's riding it. I have seen a couple threads on here describing the same issue, but I haven't seen any updates with a viable solution. Do you think this thing is just fried & a replacement speedo will remedy the problem? The bike has just under 5k.

Next time it happens , tell him to cut the key off and then restart. I'm having the same issue with my 07 K9.

If you have same speedo I do on my 2006 K9 - you may need to take apart and re-solider wires inside. there are a fair amount of thread on this site about it.

Yes I have a 2002 Pitbull and mine works fine for awhile, then it will stop working and if I give it a little gas while riding it will sweep and then work for a little while like a 1/2 mile. I cleaned my sensor and it still does it. Gets pretty frustrating.

These early ones are sealed, but you can carefully cut around the plastic to open them up once you have it removed. remove old solder and re-solder as many joints as you can. Be careful of the "flat loom" cable, if this breaks then its will be a bitch to repair (just try not to bend it back and forth)

The lamps may have burnt and melted the plastic "lens", check and carefully cut away the melted bits and cut it back to clear the lamps.

on occasion, the same thing happens to me. have checked it out and decided it happens when the battery is just a little bit low on charge. this is also the reason BDM re-wrote the program for the EHC to do a second sweep after the motor started. it was covered under a service bulletin back around '08. shane and i tried to get the flash from jason (ohmster) down at carl's speed shop in daytona but our EHCs would not accept the new program. so i ride a few miles until the battery builds back up and shut it down and re-start it.

Absolutely, just ride it down the end of the block and restart the bike. The low starting voltage on initial start-up does this. Or, get a Dakota Digital from Don and never worry about it again. This can indicate the battery is getting weak and the start-up voltage is dropping lower than when new.

Thank you all so much! I was skeptical about the advice to ride the beast a little, shut it down and retry. Damned if the speedo doesn't work perrfectly and I have to do it each time I ride!
The funny thing is that once it is working, I can shut it down, have lunch and restart and the speedo works!
I bought a 2007 K9 Limited edition #5 of 100 with 4700 miles on her in beautiful condition. Everything works now and it is a blast to ride.

Interesting but I called the seller and asked him when he last replaced the battery.
Mind you this is a 2007 bike...seven years old. He said he never has replaced it!! Just kept it on a battery tender!!
This is the first thing I'm going to replace and I'll bet it solves the problem.
The bike is a blast! First time I ever rode with extended forks and it took a little getting used to but I've been riding for over 50 years and it became a piece of cake in 20 miles.

PS. A Dakota Digital is in my future for sure.
