Speedo and Tach stopped working

Went for a ride the other day and rode through a brief rain shower. I have ridden through a lot worse over the years with no electrical problems. So I stopped for a beer or two, and waited for it to pass. When I started the bike back up both the speedo and tach did not move, cycle, show any signs of life or anything . I was able to ride home with no problem, all the turn signals, and lights all continue work.

I cleaned the speed sensor and checked the connectors, but still no luck. Perhaps its time to replace the Auto-meter with a Dakota Digital or the ECH with a WP.

Any thoughts or suggestions before I go that route would be appreciated.

Ride safe,

I have an '05 and mine did the same thing within the first few months. So, i dont remember what caused it but BDM Tampa replaced my whole unit and I havent a problem (not with that part anyway!) since. I would recommend calling the shop you bought your bike from. They may be able give you some ideas as to why this happened.

Check the Speedo/Tach. connector under the tank.

Then check the "Two" "D" connectors on the EHC.

Then check inside of the Speedo/Tach. itself.

No use to replace the speedo/tach unless it's bad. Plus Dakota Digital is just the speedo part alone, not tach.

Replacing the EHC with the Wp won't help. The Speedo is just a pass through circuit, and the Tach. is too, but it's Tee'ed off to supply RPM pulses to the memory in the EHC. But bot can be hard wire by-passed on the outside of the EHC. That's what's done with the WP unit! But I wouldn't suggest that unless you have to because of internal EHC damage.

Good Luck! :2thumbs:

Keep in mind he has an 03 which doesn't have the "two D connectors or a tach. :D

Are the indicator lights (oil, turn, etc) working? The Speedo and tach board have different power feeds, so it's odd if everything is down....

Sorry I didn't say up front I have an (old but well used) 03 Mastiff.

Yes, all the other lights work (turn signal. oil, neutral and high beam lights all work).

My ECH is located under the dash plate between the split fuel tank. I thought I checked all the connectors but may have missed some. Is there a diagram some place that would show the locations of the connectors beside the obvious places?

I also disconnected and reconnected the battery to see if that made a difference and it didn't.

Thanks again for all the feedback! :2thumbs:

I take it you have the tach that is mounted on the handlebars right? Weird that the tach and speedometer (seperate components) would go out at the same time so that would lead me to believe you have a short in a wiring connection or one of the connectors came loose. I think there are wiring diagrams in the Tech section here that will lead you to a connector that may be causing your problem.
Time to start tracing wires.

Thanks Ray,

Yes I have handlebar mounted tach, and tank/dash mounted speedo. And yes they did go out at the same time.

So in re-tracing wires, is it best to start drinking before, during or after you trace wires? I hate electrical problems!

Thanks again for the follow up!

I hear ya Brent. My cruise control just started working again after about a week of nothing. Then poof! It started working again. Magic??
Yes, drinking does seem to take the edge off when getting frustrated!

Speedo Tach update,

It seems the more I look the more I find. Now the plate light and tail lights are not working as well. So my gremlin is some where in the Tach, Speedo, Tail Lights or Plate Light. I did stopped by a friends house for dinner and picked up his OHM Meter in hope of chasing down the electric gremlins.

May have to take a 4th of July break and enjoy some boating and fireworks down at waterside for now and leave the bike for Monday.

I wish all my Big Dog family a great 4th of July.

More to follow,
