Something went wrong

On saturday after ridding 185 miles whith a few stops to hydrate and feed, I went to start 2004 Mastiff an the starter got stuck spinning as the engine was running. I was in neutral, so i turn the key to the off position and that did not work, then I depressed both brakes and put it in first and let go of the clutch to cut it off. Once off, i turn the key and got power, I pressed the start button and the bike started fine. i made it home only about 1.5 miles away from that last stop. when i got home i took the seat off to check the battery and noticed that the negative terminal on the battery was melted off and the same side on the inside part of the seat melted the material to the metal. My question is, Did the battery cause the starter to stick? or Did the seat touch the battery terminal and caused some kind of short? or is my starter going bad? Its the first time its shown any signs of problems. this bike starts right up all the time. Thanks for any feedback.

When I first took delivery of my BD the dealer hadn't tightened down the battery terminal and the third time I tried to start it the neg terminal melted just like that and since then I've had a few times where my starter spins (with no engage) on startup but never while the engine was running.

mine has melted on the positive battery post and melted up in to my seat also, i think it had a loose connection so i put a longer bolt in and tightened it down real good and it seemed to have helped but i havent had a problem with my starter hanging up

RIDE IT HARD!!!
Mine did that and had to pull the neg wire off the battery to get it to stop spinning. Starter solinoid went bad. Killed the EHC too. Replaced EHC and starter and no problems anymore.

I have an 04 Mastiff also, and when I first got it, I was having a slew of electrical problems, but never as you had. I noticed a couple places under the bottom of my seat that showed melting and got to looking at how close the metal base on my seat was to all my electrical components. I got an old car inner tube and cut pieces off it to fit under my seat, insulating the metal base on my seat from all the wires and gadgets. I have not had a problem, electrical anyways, since I did this. Might want to give it a try after you get your other problems fixed. I've stated before, our seats should be made with a nonconductive base......such as fiberglass or similar materials.!!

Good luck
