So this past Sunday in Oklahoma the weather was an amazing 72 degrees and sunny, so the annual Toy Run was on and 300+ bikes and old cars are lined up for the ride. We are about 1/2 way through and I start to smell something burning, not good, different from a clutch smell, but like I said theres a ton of bikes and old cars so just kept cruising along. When I get to the end and start unloading toys from the TBag, I notice a small swirl of a dust cloud from under my bike and as I walk to the front I see 6" flames coming from the bottom of my front motor mount area. Immediately and in a panic I drop down and start to hit them with my hat and blowing on the flames (yes, I know that was only making things worse) suddenly someone hands me some water and I douse the flames. Now it becomes clear.... the dumbass who's bike is burning and stinking is ME! My Voltage regulator was toast, burned through the topside of the VR, melted my cam sensor wire, and carmelized my paint slightly. I was ultimately able to d/c the VR hot wire and ride the bike back home to work on it. But my bike was on fire!
My bike is an '09 mastiff that I bought off the showroom floor in '10, this is the stock Voltage regulator that came with the bike. I searched and found some threads on the pre- '07 recall, but I shouldn't have had this assuming the newer models were fixed. I have been religious with using the battery tender and routine mechanical maitenance but have to confess that I don't do well with electrical work and maintenance(I blame it on being colorblind). Word of caution to my BDB brothers that are new to the bikes, check the older threads and perform a quick evaluation to avoid this from happening to you.
On the upside, I gotta give love and props to Amylulu from Strokers. In my time of need she really came through. She immediately got the VR and sensor wires ordered with shipping to me this week, and best of all hooked me up with the forum discount. Amy(the angel), thanks so much! Hope to meet you in person soon. I am a loyal Strokers customer for life. Without BigDog being around to help, its fantastic to have a resource like Strokers, they know these machines and have made an effort to embrace us, that's an awesome way to run a business.
