Soldier with a 2005 Pitbull starting Issue

This is for a local soldier at Ft Lewis, WA. This has been going on for some time, and he is getting frustrated. Can we help him? Thanks all. :2thumbs:

I have a problem with my bike that when I ride if I stop and shut-it off it doesn't want it start right away. I have to wait until it cools down and then it fires up good. I have a new battery (heavy duty with over 300 CCA) and its still doing the same thing.
Did you hear about anything like this before?
My bike is a Pitbull 05.
Any help is appreciated as my ride time is very limited.
Thanks, Big Walt :flag:

:hi: coming from someone that knows nothing ( i'm talkin' about myself, here), IMO, it sounds like the problem is heat related----possibly bad connection----has the VR been replaced under recall? check connections on the starter. starter could be going bad. just thoughts......:2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I think this has gone around before...

Like wood is saying... its a heat or more over a electrical problem.

I just can't remember what it was that was the culprit on the other guys... maybe the crank sensor...

Does the bike do anything? click, chatter, etc.

There is a couple of possiblilties (at least):

1. Could be an arc'd up set of contacts on the solenoid plunger or contqacts themselves. If the battery cable post on top of the solenoid os torqued to over 80 in/lbs, the contact will rotate and reduce the surface area to transfer current to the starter motor.

2. Poor connections at the battery, starter or ground. (battery cable attached to the upper starter mounting bolt).

3. oil contamination in the starter brush assembly.

I would remove the end cap off of the soleniod and manually engage the solenoid plunger to see if the starrter engages and spins over.

If it does, put the cover back on and take a jumper wire from the positive side of the battery to the single spade terminal on the outside of the solenoid housing. If the starter kicks in and spins over, you've got a problem in the wiring or ehc. Look at the EHC and see if a green led comes on when you hit the start button.

keep us posted!

Cam sensor or EHC

With the heat up the Cam Sensor can mess up.

Start it up let it idle then shut it down.... Does it restart?

Does it happen everytime?

What lights on your EHC lite up when it wont start?

05 models didn't have cam sensors. That is the first year of the crank position sensor.:zz2cents:

hmmm I thought it was on the 06 they changed the sensor. But know I know. Dogvet have you run into this problem before? You have a lot more knowledge on this matter than I do. I know on my 04 it was the Cam Sensor when it heated up it messed up but with mine it would run like crap. And I had to wait to restart till the bike cooled. Sucked here in the Southwest means average is 95 degrees in the summer and the bike gets warm quickly

I've dealt with the cam sensor problem before, what a pain! I was hoping for more info, like does the bike turn over and not start, does it have a spark, stuff like that.

It could be anything based on the info so far, such as a gas cap not venting right (if the engine is turning over), an in-line fuel filter vapor locking if one has been installed.

Need to know if the starter turns the engine over and if it does, are the leds on the ignition module flashing.

They even had some bad switches (intermittant contacts) in early 05

Big Walt was on here late last night and I told him there would be questions, so hopefully he will check in this evening...

:2thumbs: Wish you were around when my dog was sick :bang: :bang:

Another round please
My crank sensor took a shit and it would crank, but not fire again. Went totally out. Not intermitent.

Thanks...

Thanks to all of you for your inputs and advice. I'm sorry, I was out of town for couple days and I just checked these messages. I will try to answer some of these questions to the best of my knowledge, like a Soldier not a mechanic.

I posted this problem a few months ago (you probably remember Chris) and one of the suggestions was to get a new heavy duty battery, which I did but the problem still.

My bike has just 1,600 miles and I just spend around $600 in Dec because it broke down with some loose clutches and luckily it wasn't more damage in there. The mechanic also checked this problem but he couldn't give me an answer.

Observations:

-The bike makes a solid "click" sound when I try to start.

-I checked the EHC and the green light came on when I was trying to start.

-If I push start or let it go down the hill it will start right away. But I don't always have volunteers to push or nice hills. And you guys know that this action is a NO-GO on nice looking bikes like Big Dogs'.

-If I just ride around my street and back it will start back right away. But if I let the engine get hot it is a different story.

Thanks again and I appreciate any other suggestions or advise.

Walt

KnotSo-Thanks, I owe you a cold one...

The click and green light is probably the compression releases

have you tried to push the solenoid itself to start it?

Green light is good! That is the starter led. Your getting a signal from your stasrt button to the EHC and the solid click means at least solenoid is activating. The fact that it push starts means ignition working.

Problem is likely in the starter. Check out solenoid contacts. With plunger out, check shaft and spring of plunger for oil contamination. could possibly have oil contamination on starter brushes or commutator on starter armature.

Thanks dogvet.

If I have problems with the solenoid, can I replace just the solenoid or do I have to replace the complete starter.

I had a very similar problem with my HD and with less than 2,000 miles started fine cold and warm but get it hot and click-click. It was the solenoid so I replaced it and all was fine.
