What exactly is the difference between the older Chopper models and the newer K9s? I have kind of half assed been looking for another Big Dog and found this 05 on Craig's list.

I understand the tire size change.

How about the electrical system?

Are these DT frames the ones that were breaking?

What do you think about the price?

2005' Big Dog Chopper DT Soft Tail

Or here is a K9 that is close by. I wonder if the guy took better care of the bike than he does his garage.

I like the looks of the K9 or at least the paint job. You're right about his shop. makes me feel better about mine.

Both are great bikes everything is the same except the frames and tire size one plus on a K-9 is the drive belt runs outside of the frame so the swing arm does not need to be removed to replace the belt.

Hmmm
For the price and handeling I'd go for the 05. Although the paint on the
K-9 is nicer . Its really prefrence.
I've ridden bikes with the 300 tire and I prefer the 250 hands down .
Either way both bikes are priced fairly and have low milage.

Electrical ask owner if the OEM EHC is still in the bike or pop the seat and look around then date battery! Its all about maintance ask (if original owner) for service records any recalls done.Price both are too low IMHO. DT Frame no cracks that I have seen.10 year old bikes to me will take a good eye
(look around) for high dollar parts that need to be replaced.

Both look great the only thing that you may be changing in the future is the rocker boxes. Some have issues with the TP rockers and some dont, they've been known to have premature wear at times. Other than that,as mentioned make sure all re-calls have been completed. Pricing is right... :2thumbs:

I'd go for the 05 as well. But you're going to have to check it out really well and ask a lot of questions. Looking at that one guys garage....I'd lose all my parts (and mind) working on something if mine looked like that......check the chrome on the bike for cracks, chipping etc....and ask your questions about maintenance, etc...if the maintenance and bike were kept up, owner should know all about the bike....

Choppers and K9 are different, the Chopper has a 10 over front end and K9 has 12 over the rise and stretch are also different. K9 has a differant tank also. Then you have the tire size 250 vs 300mm.

Looks like an early 06 K-9. If I'm seeing it correctly, both have TP's.

I've got an 08 K-9 and an 05 DT Chopper / like both.

Since the K-9 is an early 06, they may have similar issues. Some of the known issues:

Counter Shaft bolt on the trans (easy fix / baker has the corrected bolt).
Trans main shaft hardening issue (I'm still running the original).
Clutch carrier prone to crack (my 05 had hairline cracks).
Electric recall on the breaker to the VR (fix was a fuse).
Rear strut bolt recall on the 05.

Also, the 05 will have an "E" carb with restrictors / 06 should have a "G".

Hope the info helps.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I will keep all this in mind as I continue looking. There are a lot of Big Dogs for sale here in the Ohio area. I am not looking for a showroom new condition one because I am looking to do a frame up custom job. Thanks again!
