What don't you understand? I certainly don't want to confuse anybody!
Dogvet...thanks, yes you know your shit. No its primary oil that I'm leaking. I just replaced it when i changed the gasket and what I was leaking was very clear and "new" oil. Gonna swap out the gaskets you mentioned.

Does anyone have a how to by chance or a diagram break down of a primary so I can see what I'm up against. Thanks.

haze... you can see some primary breaking down in my thread below

The easy english on the starter leak...

The damn gasket where the starter goes into the primary leaks, and if gone too long (usually too long by the time you see it) the starter gets saturated with the primary oil.

The best fix.... do you know what it is? Some of us do...

good info Gas Man, but the primary configuration on a 03 is completely different than 05 and later BDM's

04 and Earlier primaries are the same configuration as HD softail primaries (Big Dog were based on the 1992 Harley primary configuration).

The 05 and later starter is actually sealed to the primary with an o-ring and not a gasket. The only gasket on the 05 and up primary is the inspection cover gasket.

I understand that dogvet... just trying to give an idea on what to look at...

Daze Pm'ed me for more info and I was going to post pics, but after reading your post and the thread over again... its a LSD... then it hit me... Alhall's belt drive conversion how to
http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/180-how-convert-chain-belt-drive.html

That should be the same setup you have. You can see what he is doing. I'm not sure if you have to remove the jackshaft or not to pull the starter???? If so drop the outer primary, pull the jack shaft, pull the starter wires and the starter itself. Replace gasket and re-install old or new starter.

Sound about right? Sul, Ray or Al????

use the dye, find the leak, fix the leak.
Yep...whole lotta guessing going on here. May not have a thing to do with the starter seal. Dye it and find the truth. I've an a smaller leak for months, but I know it's nothing big (so why open up the primary if it ain't hurt'n nothing).

Of course if you're notably needing to "top-off" the primary, then it's worth fixing. Rember back when "no leaks" only meant you were bone dry and out of something?
