Sissy bar screws

I just purchased a sissy bar for my 07 k9. Took strut plugs out
Put sissy bar in and bolts won't thread up. Do I need longer bolts
For it? Thanks in advance!

the bolts are 1-3/4 long and I got grade 8 chrome plated. If the ends of the bar are tappered and use the collets make sure the slit in the collet is not at the thin wall of the strut.

That happened to me also . I think the bolts are
The wrong threads. I went to Home Depot and
got new bolts
Bingo I just got the bolts at Lowes. I didn't want to F with the set screw. I dont recall what thread pattern they are off the top of my head. I actually haven't taken my bar off since I put it on about a year ago.

The screws will screw into the end of sissy bar when not installed
through strut holes. I will get the 1 3/4 ones, tks again

I think they are 3/8'' UNC socket head set screws.
If you get them in stainless steel they look good and won't rust if leaving on your bike.

There should not be an issue with SS as there is no load on them. They are just retaining the rack.
USe a good anti seize on all ss bolts and you should not have any problems.

Just my 2 cents is all.

On the K9 Sissy Bar with the tappered end's. Does someone have the right size collet for these? Do you need the collets? Or would a just any Grade 8 - 3/8 x1-3/4 bolt work?

The tappered end of the sissy bar into the strut is a weird fit, not sure it appears that safe

You need the tappered collets, the collets take up tolerance differences between struts and sissy bar diameters. I had the slit in the collet to the thin wall of the strut and it cracked the strut. I cut the tappered end off (.750 or 3/4") my sissy bar and mounted it that way, the tapped hole was plenty deep enough in the sissy bar. Just make sure the diameter of the sissy bar is smaller than the hole in the strut. Mine's been like this for about 2 yrs trouble free.

I'll be honest cutting the tappered end off makes the most sense. I'm still trying to understand how the tappered sissy bar/collet system works. :loony:

Thinking out LOUD:
The struts in the sissy bar have a machined stop about mid-way through the hole. The sissy bar tappered end sits at the top of this and the slack/play due to the "tapper" is significant. I understand a bolt will hold it but why would they make it tappered? The collet makes sense except for if you put it on the tappered end of the sissy bar to take up the slack the collet can't expant. The bolt is threaded the sissy bar?

Heres a pic of the sissy bar strut hole. What is the little hole in the side of that stop ring for?

Part number bdm 240-000373-00. Biker dreams of Atlanta is where I get mine when I lose em. I have the same exact set up in my 08.

The little hole you are talking about is for the plugs that go in there when the collets and sissy bar are out. It makes sure you put the correct plug in each hole and not accidently swap it with the one from the other side. The tops of the plugs are contoured to the top roundness of the struts so it looks smooth. Once you get the plugs you will see exactly what I mean. The little holes have absolutely no function with the collets and sissy bar.

Don't cut the ends off. Buy the collets. $30 for the pair plus shipping if I remember correctly. Don't ruin the bar.

The little hole at the bottom of the counterbore is to locate the plug properly so it is smooth, or flush with the top, when its installed in the strut. Look on the bottom of the plug you took out there should be a little pin in it.
The collet fits in the hole and sits on the step in the strut, when you put the sissy bar in it and tighten the screw it draws the sissy bar down and spreads the collet to tighten in the hole.
Look at the PDF top view on my last post. The collet has a saw cut in it for it to expand if you draw down on it.

I used the collets the first time and when I tightened the sissy bar bolt, it expanded the collet to the point of spliting the strut at the hole. Just saying, been there done that, its always your choice. The strut cost me $185:rant:

I used a compressed washer at the end of the bolt. No need to tighten it that hard. Once its snug and secure you are good to go. My problem is that i would occasionally take the sissy bar off and forget to take the collets out. I would go for a ride hit a bump and they would pop out of the hole. That was before I bought the plugs for the holes. Below are pictures of the sissy bar end with the collet and also a picture of the sissy bar plug. You could see the rounded off top that follows the contour of the sissy bar. Like Ker said above you will see the little pin which sits in the tiny little hole to line up the plug. This should answer any questions one may have about this set up. Most big dogs don't have this set up.

Shit $30 bucks for these things....damn

Still need 1-3/4" bolt when you use it?

The Spaniard
Don´t tighten too hard .... the Instructions that come with the Sissy Bar says: "Use the 5/16 Allen wrench and torque to 38-40 ft*lbs"
