Pardon if this is old news, but for those who don't know; some of the sissy bars are being recalled. they must meet min. thickness and if not, they are being replaced. both Paul and I had our bars replaced. it seams that some of them have broken and or cracked.
Make sure you get them checked, i would have haited to go back and pick Patty up off the street, she gets rather mad over stuff like that

Haven't had any hint of trouble with mine - can you give us any more detail on the problem? Sounds like some of them have not been had a large enough diameter of the bar?? Any idea what it should be?

Would this be true for new ones? I am still taming the dog before adding a co-pilot.

Ok, in FL the bugs grow to the size of birds hence the windscreen - I prefer beef.

the bars do not have a manufacture date, so have them checked. we had no visable signs of failure, they measure the bars, if they are under sized, they get replaced. don't take a chance

I heard that the other day from the mechanic in San Antonio. He said just keep an eye on it.

Did you get your bar setup?
I got everything right after I got back from work... 2-up seat, sissy bar, luggage rack and passenger pegs. $1k gone in one shot.

I did get lucky in that the bike came with the struts already, just needed the sissy bar.

That paint job grows on me every time I see it. Have you thought about what bag you will put on the back of the bar?

I have an old back pack I have been using, with a small cargo net keeping it secure.

"He said keep your eye on it" is that before or after your wife falls off the back. this is a mandated recall. have it checked.

Boy, the CRUD must really being going around - first Vickie, and now our local NW warranty specialist, Tonya, has called in sick.

I called to check on the Sissy Bar recall - they told me they'd check to see if it applies to me.

Has anybody actually seen the text of the recall??

Dealer called right back - here's what he told me.

Remove the bottom bolts and pull out the sissy bar. Measure up 1/2" from the bottom of the bar, and measure the bar diameter at that point. Measure the diameter TWICE, at 90 degrees to each other, in the same location. The diameter must not be less than 0.680 inches - at all.

Apparently there was a batch that were too narrow. The recall doesn't apply to any specific VIN number or year, because the bars could have been installed on almost anything.

The symptom is that the smaller diameter bars can move back and forth inside the strut holes, often enough to break the bolts - so if you've had trouble breaking bolts, you probably have one of the bad sissy bars.

Personally, mine was a very snug fit, and no bolts have broken - but I'll definitely be checking it anyway.

Tim, be sure to watch the bottom of whatever bag you put back there. It's easy for it to fall below the luggage rack and chafe on the rear fender. Both me and chacha (I think) learned the hard way. One day of riding, and I had serious scuff marks in the clear coat.

I just looked at mine and noticed the bolt was broken off!! This damn thing has always moved around in the holes, I just figured it was a shitty design and oh well. After 15 minutes of cussing I got the bolt out. Mine is certainly too small, unless I torque the heck out of the bolts it wiggles back and forth...calling dealer!

How old... my cheap $25 harbor freight caliper measures mine at .675 - .678 on both sides. Mine is from March last year...

I have never had a problem with mine breaking but it only goes on maybe 3-4 times a year and is only on for a few hours.

Sounds like you have a bad one, GM - my dealer really stressed that they don't want to see ANYTHING less than the 0.680 minimum, or you get a new one.

Far as I'm concerned, you guys are Missing 2 Opportunities here.

(1) Upgraded Wife.
(2) Upgraded Bike.

Wish I had a defective Sissy Bar.
Blitz, clearly you are NOT paying attention to the prospective calendar pics - no need here for an upgraded wife! :whoop:

I made a band from some bungee cord material that goes around the sissy bar and luggage rack to keep anything off of the fender. I remember you mentioning this before and it has stuck in my mind.

I'll take a picture of what I made so you can see what I'm talking about.

That's before every ride to see if there are any signs of stress or fractures. I'll measure mine when I get back home.

Thanks for the details P8RIOT. :2thumbs:
