The 12 inch I just sold had flat ends....but the 18 inch I just received had a tiny beveled edge on the end...... both for a 300 rear.... mine is a 2007.

Whats up ?

I have both designs (flat/tapered) from an engineering standpoint the tapered ends when mated with the tapered sleeve reduces the load on the sissy bar mounting bolt.

Good point Five.
If you have the struts with tapered holes, which I of course do not.
I ended up having to bore the sissy bar slightly so I could get the unthreaded portion of a bolt to fit up inside the sissy bar to stop the bolt from breaking at the thread where the strut and sissy bar mate.

Only difference between the two are a beveled edge....bars aren't tapered that I can tell....doesn't seem like it would be as strong as a total flat bottom....may have to do some trimming.
