side cover paint damage

The paint on right side cover has blistering due to heat damage from the V&H Big radius pipes, it also happened on my friends 06 K9 with the same pipes. I just ordered new side covers today from BDM Performance, going to send them to Air-brush Ed for paint.

Here's my thought, they are too close to the heat shield, probably 3/4 inch clearance, why couldn't I take some heat wrap to put on the pipe in that area from the flange done to around 8 inches and then put the heat shield over it, why wouldn't that work.

if anyone has a better idea, out side of changing the pipes, I would appreciate it.

If mine are ever damaged, I am going to look into having carbon fiber replicas made...

Mine did the same thing. I replaced it with a factory battery cover and coated the exhaust with a product called Black Satin by Tech Line coatings. I have used this on my cars. I used to burn plug wires on my headers even when I used heat wrap. This stuff is very durable and a really great thermal coating. You spray it on with an airbrush and then let the exhaust heat cure it and then install your heat sheilds. My car headers would get hot enough to melt my poly motor mounts like candle wax.

Check with bigdogbro1:I think he rapped his pipe for the same reason.

I talked to Bigdogbro1, He has already put heat rap on his, no more damage, i just had this done to mine, used stainless tie wraps to secure it, you only have to rap around 6 inches from the flange done. Your heat shield then covers the wrap. I would highy recommend this for anyone with V&H big radius pipes to prevent damage to your paint and side cover

You could have the insides of the pipes ceramic coated.

One MUST re-jet (31 & 76) at a minimum with these pipes, bump that up depending on air-filter and if you have a modified carb. else your rear cylinder will always run HOT causing the battery covers to melt.
