Shutdown on the way to work.

Bad dog, no bisquit
Just pushed the Dog about a 1/2 mile up to my friends house, up hill of coarse, Hitched a ride to work. Have a few meetings today, so not much time to dig through the forum for Ideas on the problem. Thought someone might have a quick answer for when I get off work.

Riding along in 5th gear, traffic slowing up, so I downshift to 4th. As soon as I do, engine shuts down and horn starts to blow. Quick turn off key then back on, lights and horn, nothing to the start button. Pull over. Did a quick look over and don't see an obvious short. All wires seem tight at battery. Turn key on, horn on, nothing to start button. Lights on module, second set from right, top yellow, bottom red blinking. Have tools on the bike. Thought somebody might have a quick answer of a fix. If not, I will have to trailer home tonight and start to dig into th issue.:bang:

Dog has been running great. Hope nothing serious.

check battery connections for corrosion/loose contact, then check you stator output and the VR.. sounds like your battery isn't getting charged.

Looking forward to retirement
Also check plug connection on stator coil on left side of motor. Had that happen to me once.

I had the same thing happen to me on the first ride last season. Voltage regulator went up in smoke.

Had VR problems in the past. Not acting that way. Stated right up all week and this morning. Only went 2 miles before it shut down. But I did check those connections. And it shut down in a snap, with the horn sounding continuous, not beeping. Could it be the ignition and the horn is an alert? As soon as I turn on the key, horn is blairring, but speedo does not cycle.

Check to make sure the VR resetable circuit breaker (fuse module) is closed or has 12v on both connections.

Battery went bad?

Mine did the horn blarring and no start at the button once. As soon as I turned the key on the horn would start and nothing else worked. I had changed my rear tire and when I put it back together I pinched the liceanse plate light wire between the bolt and rear caliper. Like to have never found it. Barley pinched it, as soon as I removed it every thing was back to normal. Look for something grounding out. If you worked on something last start there and work your way back. Hope this helps

update after a couple hours and a few Jack and cokes. JACK, Charged the battery. All good. JACK,Pulled all the wires and cleaned and sanded. Placed back on battery. Turn key, horn screaming ,no headlights. Speedo cycles, turn signals work bike won't start. JACK, Hold left turn signal and turn on key to let EHC cycle. Of coarse the horn is the fault light that stays on. Pull oil covers to check wires to horn and relay and anything else I could see. All look good. JACK, Disconnect EHC, clean the pins, pump full of dielectric grease and reconnect. Turn key, same as above. JACK, pull left control ogg handlebar, check circate board, all looks good. Turn on key, same as above and that damn horn is starting to give me a headache. 2 JACKS. Pull headlight apart to check since I had installed the HID beginning off last year. Thought that after stuffing 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bucket that maybe something shifted and caused a short. All looks good, check connections, turn key and that fucking horn again. JACK Pull both wires to horn, try to start, nothing, Well needless to say I have gotten nothing accomplished except the start of a real good buzz. Too many drinks in my head to think about tearing off the gas tank tonight. This sucks!!!!!!

Any ideas boys??

I would pullout the hid kit,and see what happens, seems to me your EHC is fucking up, it might not like the hid unit!!

I have put on over 3000 miles since the HID install w/o any issues, at all. I doubt that is the issue but I guess It's worth a try.

Most of the guys I know with bd will not touch any hid kits, unless the running wp or pdm setups,if you are running the EHC ,well that's a diff story.

I am using the one from Low Down Chop Shop that seems to have a great track record with our bikes and the ehc, from the many threads on this forum. But it is worth a change over to check if I don't find anything under the tank today. I hope it's not the HID, one of the best upgrades I made.

Well I am at the end of my rope. I have checked every wire and connection from front to back of bike. Battery good, Converted headlight back to standard, not HID. Still the same thing. Turn key, horn on, speedo cycles, no headlight and bike won't start, turn signals work. Horn fault light on EHC. Is there anyway to test if the EHC is bad. After going all over this bike, it's the most over engineered bike I have come across. No wonder so many electrical problems. May have to go the Moespeeds way and re wire KISS(keep it simple stupid). I am glad I was close to home and not out in the middle of nowhere. It seems like once these bikes shutdown in the field it is unlikely that you will get the bike running w/o garage time if an electrical issue.

Frustrating. Still open for any idea's. Hate to spend big buck on another wiring option if the EHC is not bad.

BFB did you try performing the EHC self-test? You know turn the key off push and hold the left turn signal button while turing the key on. All the lights on the EHC should light up exceppt the Link light for 3 seconds. After the test is complete the only two lights that should be on is the green and yellow light. If any others are lit then you have a fault on that circuit.
