Show polishing engine/Powder coating engine

Anyone have suggestions on who is out there performing this service? I priced it through Meclec and the total, not including shipping, was around $1600. To top that off I would have to pay to have the engine taken down. My local speed shop gave me a price of $700-$800, including the new gaskets (that included disassembly and reassembly). So I'm looking at paying half the price of a new show polished engine for the same results.

The only other option would be to have it powder coated. My local SS claims that this process has been known to "soften" critical engine parts during the high temp. baking.

I'm feeling a little down at this moment. :bang:

Any suggestions?

I can't speek specifically to the V-Twins but I have powder-coated many sport bike motors and the so-called high temp's of the baking process is no where near the temps that change the properties of aluminum. IMHO. If your worried about it try having the parts cyro'd after the powder coating. Imersion in -300 liquid will surely undo anything the heat from baking does. Don't know how it would affect the powder coat itself but we have been doing cryo treating to racing motors for 9 years on my daughters racing karts.

RIDE IT HARD!!!
Powder coat only gets heated to about 350 degrees. Not hot enough to do anything to the aluminum. Used to work for an aluminum co. and the 350 is where we would heat treat the metal to for hardening.

Hmmm...they must use someone else to coat now then. I inquired last year at sturgis and they could coat/cut if I sent them the jugs/heads for like 1900...which sounded WAY too high. Just curious, thanks.

diamonds heads works with sumax ....thats why. i have 350 in powder coat and 550 in show cut, they do offer a 450 cut which is nice. only differance is they cut 3 rows on bottom of jugs. so you could do it for 800 bucks

I had been thinking about the diamond cut. I wondered if the powdercoating would affect the temp./cooling, but the diamond cut would possibly offset that. Very nice Ridgeback!

Where did you have it done?

nixon319........diamond heads did cut. powder done locally 300bucks.

the coating is polyester and it does breathe and has no effect on cooling.

as a matter of fact i have higher compression and oil temp in traffic on a hot day is still 205 degrees

Hey 05ridgeback your engine look great. Whoever reassembled your motor must really have an attention to detail. Thats Right!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input guys. I think i'm going to go with powdercoat and diamond cut. Polishing isn't going to end up much more, but after alot of thought the powdercoating w/DC would be slick. I just need to find a good shop to do the pc.

Now that only leaves me with....paint, new front end, pipes, chrome wheels, open primary. :2thumbs:
