Shortest trip to Sturgis

Well FU$%! Decided last night I was going. The gang is already there and the extra bed room is waiting for me. So i told my wife, I am heading up on the dog, I'll be 2 days there two days in Sturgis and 2 days back. So I packed the big T-Bag and a extra Harley wedge 1 gal fuel tank and hit the road this morning at 5:am. Got 45 miles out of town and noticed my right blinker on, and I never touched it. Then the left one started blinking and the right one quit. This went on back and forth till about 5 miles from Texarkana. I pulled in to top off my fuel and did a check over all my blinkers when I fired the dog back up. Blinkers now worked as they should BUT NO break lights! So I made the choose to head back home. I think the heart EHC might be ready to finally crap out! Just played it safe, did not want to get 900 miles from home and the bike crap out. Leaving on a 3000 mile bike trip with a bike having electrical issues in the first 100 miles is a bad omen!

And your point is.... All BD bikes have electrical problems (sooner or later) unless you totally rewire them with Harley wire. (I know Curtis, just pass this by and have a drink)

I've got the Scooters Harley kit coming that eliminates all modules/computers and uses low cost Harley parts. After $1,000 on a wire-plus system which lasted 200 miles I'm done for good with BD electrics. Great bikes but with bad electrics.

I've hot wired my bike to start and have running lights and a headlight just so I can ride. I had the same problem as you. First the right turn signal would come on when I started it then both front turn signals would come on after 5 miles or so then the bike would die.

I don't know about you all but I want to be able to ride and not worry about gettin home. I love the bike and just want to ride it. Total cost for the Harley kit, Harley controls/switches and modifying my handlebars $675.00 plus an afternoon of my time. Well worth it for piece of mind. And, don't tell me the R.I.P. system will fix your problems because it still uses the stock BD switches which are impossible to find and still uses a computer.....

And stop deleting all the "I need BD control posts" so members don't find out there not available and you can still sell wire-plus and RIP kits...

We are not deleting those posts (unless they are violating the clearly stated posting rules), and BD parts are still available from our vendors/sponsors on BDB. Thousands of big dogs have had no more issues than any other motorcycle..
However, it is always good to hear of more solutions, prices and opinions.:2thumbs:

Topic title should be
Shortest trip to Sturgis and Home without going too Sturgis. :D

Jonathan, you made the right decision.

BTW, I was in WY for 3 weeks this summer but failed to schedule my trip correctly. So, I still haven't been to Sturgis!

I know what you mean! Plus we had a bad storm here 2 weeks ago with 60 mPH wind. Lost 1 tree and the top of another came down on one of my split rail horse fences. Took me all week after work to remove top and cut up for fire wood and fix fence!

I apologize for typing about deleting posts. I saw a few posts asking for help finding switches and/or controls and no one answering them. Then they sort of disappeared. I saw 2 of them today.

I'm not trying to "piss in anyone's corn flakes" but I would like to see a link or 2 with someone selling both new switches and controls for a price we can afford. Not just some switch parts but full sets.

This is a great board with a lot of good members and vendors. I have bought parts from a few already and had great service. I have learned a lot from the members about my new bike.

I got my bike 7 weeks ago. Rode it 3 times and spent over $1,000 on a WP kit. 200 miles later it didn't run. Called WP they blamed it on my switches.

Tried to find new switches that could replace them but only found BD switch parts at a very costly price. Re-checked the switches and found they are good. So I'm a little bit angry at myself for spending that kind of money and still having to hot wire the bike so I can ride it.

I make good money so I can afford to redo it but others may not be in that position and if this happens to them they will lose the rest of the summer with their bike down. I really would hate to see that happen.

We all love our bikes and love to ride. A forum is where different opinions are expressed/viewed and members can make up their own minds as what to do, what parts to buy, what vendors to use and what direction they should go in. When it gets one sided all the members suffer.

Again, I apologize for typing about deleting posts I was out of line.

remember everybody, whether wireplus, m-unit, RIP, or any other rewire kit, they are not a guaranteed fix for what ails the bike. you must troubleshoot the bike to make sure it isn't something else on the bike that is causing you headaches. start with the cheap, easily replaced parts first after you run down any loose connections, bad grounds, or whatever before you start throwing big money at it for something that may not work. do your due diligence first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I totally agree! Electrical is NOT my strong suit! I can tear down any thing from a Deutz diesel to a 12V92 Detroit 2 cycle Diesel to a V twin Harley Davidson motor and rebuild it back to new. But electrical always has had me puzzled! So I'm bringing the bike to a friend who was a Big Dog dealer. He's one of the best at chasing electric rabbits down I've ever seen!

I also thought I knew a little about electricity but it kicks my butt every once and a while. :bang: I do get to learn something every time it gets the better of me and frustrates the crap out of me. :D In the end, I get to say "Really, who would have thought that could happen?"

Vodka and Cranberry Juice - nice:cheers:
