Shifter Spring?

I have a 2006 K-9 and just recently the shifter isn't coming back to the neutral position when downshifting when the motor and tranny are hot. It works fine when it is cold and it also works fine when upshifting. Anyone have any suggestions, spraying lube on it works for a while until I wash the bike then I have to lube again, which is not a problem but I do not think this is normal.

A lot of folks here have had issues with the Heim joints although I still have my originals after almost 4 yrs.

I would also check the rear lever that attaches your shift rod to the tranny. It's mount with a pinch bolt to a splined shaft and if loose it could be rubbing against the tranny case.

I had the same issues and it was the heim joints starting to seize. Even after replacing them and only putting on about 400 miles it started acting the same. I was lubing the joints on almost every stop so it would not continue, but after washing the bike it would start again.

Took the linkage apart, used anti-seize on the joints and several thousand miles later, numerous washings and the shifter is still working fine.

If replacing the heim joints try to find the ones that don't have the plastic/teflon in them. Thats the only ones I have had problems with.

Thanks for the anti-seize tip I will try that. I checked linkage and it is not rubbing on anything. I just ordered the heim joints so when I install them I will use the anti-seize.

I just installed the new rod ends and used some white lithium grease and it works great, I can't remember the last time it shifted this well
