She honks when I push start...and doesn’t start.

Hi guys,
New to the scene so if this isn’t proper protocol, please forgive me and feel free to correct me.
Ive got a problem starting my bike. I wouldn’t complain if this issue didn’t make riding her so hard. I mean after a 100 feet...i’m totally wiped out.

So here’s what’s up. After hitting OFF, OFF, RUN (as instructed by the previous owner - hope he want messing with me, lol), I hit the START button. I get about half a crank and then one or both blinkers come on and she’s dead. I can repeat the process over and over and sometimes she crank and start but mostly the former.

So it doesn’t seem like a dead battery but maybe the next best thing???

I left her on a trickle charger all day and came home to the same thing. After 6 or eight runs thru this routine, she started right up.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like battery to me. Not enough cranking amps. Go to the Harley dealer and pick up a new battery. I forget the number, but it ends with 97A. These batteries will give you years of service.

Ok, two possibilities

1 -- weak battery -- these beast need POWER to start, if your battery isn't rated at 310CCA (real) and really producing it, its going to give you trouble.

How old is the battery?
When you say 6 or 8 runs thru that routine, was there a temperature change (higher) when she finally started?

2 -- EHC -- I've had 2 K-9's that both had their EHC (computer) fail when the bikes got COLD (below 40/45 degrees)

Hopefully it's not the EHC as that's the more expensive issue/solution.

Take the battery out and have someone load test it. At room temp with full charge you should see 500+ CA (might be told it CCA but that's a lie)

For all the naysayers and I have a miracle brand battery that has 500+ CCA -- I call BS -- Given the number of Battery manufacturers and that none of them list the battery that fits in the BDM's as having 500+ CCA, this is an indicator that something fishy is going on with their specs.

All 3 standard test methods for determining CCA REQUIRE the battery to be held at 0 Degrees F for a period of 24Hrs before testing. I've never seen a battery place or auto/motorcycle dealer equipped to test properly. The tests devices are guessing at what CCA could be based on some standard calculations of how temp effects a GOOD battery, but if the battery is not good those calculations are not reliable.

Sorry for the rant -- tired of hearing about Mystery Brand batteries that have performance that is leap[s and bounds over what the OEM claims.

None of their standard batteries had more than 380 CCAs btw.

I don't know about the Lithium bat but the standard Harley bat is real good. Your symptoms have been asked on here a hundred times and just about always comes back to a weak bat. Shows good but to weak to turn these things over on a consistant basis. If for some reason the new bat doesn't fix the prob check the run button, they wear out. I had to take controls apart on mine and shim the back of the button with some pieces of electrical tape to build it up. Was having similar issues as you. No more problems after that. And a good idea to put a slam button on starter for a back up in case you ever need it
