Ray, I hope I didn't offend you. I wasn't saying anything about the size of you tire. I think it's really childish of someone to make fun of someones bike no matter what it is. Hell, I wave to people on mopeds and vespas. For that matter, I've ridden a vespa.

No sweat bro, it's all fun here. Can you believe we are debating the width of a FAT tire????? 240, 250, 300 or 330 they are all fat compared to our friendly HD's. Lets see, my FXWG had a 140!!!!!!! I almost can't type that. :D

I know what you mean. While dad and I were debating on what to get back in 2004(we were debating for a long time:)) Harley was one of the choices. Now when i see a Harley, I just think they need something more outback. I just can't seem to put my finger on it.:D I am starting to really like custom baggers now though, have to change it to a 240 though.

My tire is shot, I replaced that last one at 19,000 miles after my cross country trip. This one has even more miles on it ... I have over 23,000 mile on this tire. It's flat spotted but still in good shape.
-----------------------------------------------
My bike is in pretty good shape for an old bike with a lot of miles on it. After re-wiring it with all the die-electic grease, shrink wrapping the connectors and filling the ends with silicone the electric system is doing great.
-----------------------------------------------
Now if only my tank was done. My brother is going to open it up for me to give me some more shape to it and another gallon of gas. It's a nightmare out here in the West wondering if I'm going to run out of gas between gas stations. The adventure of the West!

Holy Crap! ~20K onna rear tire? THAT has been one of my biggest concerns about moving up to a Big Dog. Geez, I've put a LOT of miles on rear tires that didn't have near as much tread as your old one...

Speaking as a retarded Airdale, I'm really liking what you did for the electrics. Sounds like you made yours into one of those "water dogs" that I 've read about.

Extra gallon, adventure of the [North]West indeed. No easy fix for that one - I'm not about to trash my spiffy new paint job [yet]. But there's this gas station in Whitehorse? The Primary Spousal Unit and myself have coasted down the hill on fumes twice now - the attendants are recognizing us. ;^} (cynical smirk)

Tire Change

Well guys, I got out this morning and headed North towards Canada for my dealer. Didn't get it done the other day due to heavy rain.
Got on the ferry at Kingstan and sailed over to the other side of the Puget Sound and got on I-5 for Mt Vernon.

Dealer was ready for me and got my bike on the lift and had the rear end apart in an instant.

Pulled the hubs and changed out the bearings (3 of them) and put it back together. Pulled the old tire and installed the new one.

Then on to the balancing machine and back on the bike.
Here is the old and the new. Ready for another 20,000 miles.

Also changed out the starter again for my 9th and then pulled the voltage regulator and verified that mine as an 04 and needed changing. Supposedly had one coming in for me but they ended up getting back-ordered as you have heard. Oh well, been good for 42,000 miles I guess it'll last a little longer. All this on a three year old bike still getting covered on warranty.

Then the ride home with a little scattered rain but otherwise it was just a cold all day ride. Was 39 when I left home! :D

Hope all your's days were as cold as mine! :loony:

Later,
Ray

I replaced all the plugs on the brake rotors recently so the brakes are good. Now new tires and I'm ready to head cross country again!

Ray, what does this mean?

If you have floating brake rotors they ride on round pins or rotor and carrier. About 10 or 12 of them (I'll have to go count). There is a tolerance for these and mine have been replaced a couple times. The measurement is movement from front to rear not side to side. Run out to your bike and wiggle and try to rotate them. If they are real loose then you need new pins.
My 03 had one piece rotors so this didn't apply.

Thanks,
Ray

9th starter... that's just crazy Ray...
Yeah but it's about 1 every 5000 miles with my mileage so that may make it a little more easy to take. :whoop: This one and several others were replaced cause they leaked not that they failed. Out of the nine I only had two that failed me. Bottm line is BDM has come through for me everytime.

I've ridden a vespa.
I'll bet most people not only haven't heard of this brand but there are large collector clubs of these bikes (scooters) that have been around for a long time.
I had an old biker buddy down in San Dog that had a large collection of Vespa's.
Cool thing. :flag:

I'll see if I can't get a pic of it sometime for ya Ray. It's my father-in-laws, he's a neurosurgeon and never rides it. He's seen first hand what motorcycle accidents do if ya know I mean. Anyway, its bright blue and gets up to about 55, yeah its one of the "bigger" ones that requires a license and tag.
