Serious question

In my other threads I have mentioned how I have spent a ton of dough only to be disappointed in motor performance. Turns out a douche bag mechanic installed my cam one tooth off last year (been running like shit ever sense), causing the valve guides to prematurely ware and scratch the valves themselves to hell. New mechanic said the timing was so far off that the valves were .040 from slamming into the pistons causing catastrophic failure. Not to incriminate myself but IF this mechanic was a trained Harley tech who did under the table work for cash, how would you handle it?

Would I be out of line to ask for a refund? What about asking him to pitch in the costs of the ongoing repairs? And if it came to it... threatening to make a call to the IRS as leverage?

I doubt he will do anything nor will he be afraid of the IRS but I wood figure out how to let the shop owner know whats going on behind his back cause thats interpreted as stealing if the guy works at a shop but as far as a Harley trained teck most are jokes anyway reputation means a hole lot more.......considering you had the teck work on an Evo style engine and the shop I just quit working for wont even touch an Evo anymore I doubt he had a hole lot of experiance on Evos cause any idiot wood have checked if he cared that is so your wastin your time as sounds like he has no pride in his work either

Let me explain... This (fictional) guy quit his job at the local Harley shop to open up his own back yard buisness. Payment is cash. He stays busy due to dirt cheap labor. I bet he would be at least some what intimidated at the threat of the IRS. Think of all the back taxes, maybe even jail time.

I would start by telling him what has happened and see what he has to say.
Doubtful he will pay for your repairs since it was a side job.
It's a chance we all take when trying to save some money.
He may be a stand up guy that made a mistake.
Confronting him is the only way to find out what kind of man he is.
I would hope to have what I paid him for returned.

this threat will only work if you can prove it... a reciept maybe.... or just fix the problem your self..... may I suggest......... a good ol ass kickin... or some good friends from a well know M/C to show up & break a few fingers.. & well a last resort.. would be a pair of good friends I carry these or others,,,

agreed, then if he gives you no satisfaction, notify the local business licensing board for the town/county and let them take care of it from there. plus word of mouth. probably won't get anything out of it, but it may save some other guy from getting screwed.

but leave the guns at home, or at least in the truck.

You mentioned above this guys 'DIRT CHEAP LABOR PRICES'....I will bet this is what swayed you to take your bike somewhere where you have no kind of written warranty,so technically the decision here made was a bad one and it was made by you so really whos fault is it????

We own a bodyshop and i give at least 5 estimates a day ,I truelly get a kick outta those who leave and get their work done somewhere else cause the guy down the street was $100 cheaper...and then they return and ask me to explain how to get a run outta the paint or could i in anyway make the color match better.....AGAIN

I agree Code and Zoning will work way better than anything else including guns or the IRS and they will act almot overnight

Eric! Goddamn, can't take you anywhere!!! :roll: :lol: Spent 23+ years in a maximum security prison for using a peashooter that made those two things look like derringers! Trust me...DEFINITELY not worth it!!! :angry: :bang::bang: :loony: But if it's as bad as you say it is and the guy won't make right about it, maybe a good old fashioned ass whopping and would certainly be in line. The sad truth is: right now the economy reaaaaally sucks, and alot of us are tryin to squeeze dollars out of dimes. If nothing else, your's is an excellent cautionary tale. Myself, I'm a union painter who's been outa work for close to 7 months now, and then earlier today I learned we're probably gonna go on strike in 2 weeks. (Greaaaaat!!!) Fortunately, though, sidework has kept me going all this time. People hire me directly as opposed to my boss' company because they can save $20 an hour. But like everyone else, I'm only human. Every once in awhile I WILL make a mistake (but don't tell that to my ol'lady!!!). When I do, though, I ALWAYS go out of my way to make it right. Not only because it's simply the right thing to do (which it is), but also becausemy livelihood depends on my reputation. If I screw someone over, word gets around. The bills don't get paid...Stress starts to mount...the ol'lady starts gettin all pissy and shit...and then I start gettin like most of us do. AND I FUCKIN HATE THAT!!! So I NEVER leave a customer unsatisfied, even if I've gota take a loss to achieve that.

The point is, maybe (hopefully!!!) your mech is the same. But at the same time, we should all be careful!!!

May not be a popular opinion but, have to agree with Jimizee. I run into it ALL the time in my profession. Difference being, I aint working on someones toys, or rides. Im typically working on their MOST expensive investment, either their home, or thier building.

I too have to laugh when I see this in my world. Everybody wants something for nothin. I cant understand how people want cheap, for the property that protects everything they own. However, plenty do. I probably replace a dozen roofs/yr on homes/businesses that have roofs less than 5yrs old

Quality costs money. The expression, You get what you pay for .... it applies to many things. I dont like paying the piper either but, its better than having your stuff hacked.

Well it is a learning experience, but the guy was an experienced tech. He did a stage 2 on my fathers bike and he loves the performance. I thought I was getting a deal... It may have been a simple mistake but it cost me a lot. I will call him and see where it goes.
