Scooter is down

I went out a couple hours ago to take about a 60 miles ride to get some stuff across town. Scooter mileage much better than my truck. I rolled it out and It started up but sounded a little weird the first couple times it turned over, then it started and ran. I was shutting the garage door, getting helmet on, etc. When I got on it I reached down to turn the choke completely off and it just died completely, nothing. I thought it might be the battery so I just snugged the posts a little and the lights came back on and it started up. Then I could smell smoke and I looked I could see a little smoke. I couldn't see anything so I took the right side cover off and found what was smoking when I turned the key on and started it.
I know this sounds stupid but I don't even know what to ask for when trying to replace this stinking thing or where to get it either. I did unhook the battery cause I don't want it burning the garage up. Could some of you very nice wonderful people tell me what this thing is and maybe point me in the right direction as far as finding it as well.( sounds like I am sucking up , but I just want to get the scooter back on the road before it get cold) maybe a little sucking up :D I did the wire plus on it a couple years ago and I think it just whatever you call it where all those tiny wires began their journey under the seat. It is smoking out of that tiny hole and a little crap was coming out too, until I turned the key off.

Any and all help is appreciated,

Ray

I do appreciate the help, really I do .. It is the wp374 switch module that is out of the one year warranty. The current price is $250 and It would be at least 3 to 4 weeks if I ordered it today before it would be shipped. Maybe they make them as ya order em. We will figure out something ,, probably covered up for the winter.

Thanks again,

Ray

Yes Sir ,, it has the fuse, and it has been no issues until yesterday, I am fixing to order the part from wire plus in a few minutes. Even the lady I talked to yesterday commented about them stinking so bad, trust me they do stink,, I might put a smaller fuse on it for the future. That little hole on the side on it had smoke blowing out of it for a instance until I shut her down. I think it should have lasted longer than that,,it probably has 2500 miles on it since the original install. I avoid the rain riding like the plague, I don't even hose it off ever. I just take the air hose and blow it off and wipe it down. It gets saw dust on it when I am turning pens in the garage,,, agrees :loony:.. I will keep up with the mileage this time , even though I don't ride a tremendous amount. Ticks me off but what can you do,, I really like riding the old dog , and I am not bitching about the bike,, just the over priced aftermarket parts that should last a bit longer than it did.

Send the fried WP unit out to the guy doing the EHC repair. He doesn't have any WP units to do a compare. Even though it's only 1 out of the 2 parts it might offer some use to him. Thats if he wants it.

He can also probably tell us what happened to your unit

The lady I talked to at Wire plus wants me to send both modules to her at Wire plus and they will check them out. She said that would get the part sooner for me if I do that for them. I am going to mark the other module eching on the medal to make sure I get the right one back, hopefully they won't screw it up too where I have to get them both. The part that is smoking they can have it, even I can figure out this is very possibly the one that has the issue.:job:

I did the wire plus on my scooter I think 3 years ago. Jake has great instructions, and I did it when I was about 90% sleep deprived. Working really goofy hours, not sleeping hardly at all. I am pretty good with stuff even like this if I have decent instructions and no one is rushing me.

I will let you know what they say they think went wrong with it. Personally I think it is their part,, the battery is practically new and spins it over plenty fast.

We will see probably in a couple weeks,

Thanks for everyones help,
Ray

Wire plus wants me to send them both modules to test them both, a little leiry of that because they might screw up the one that is not blowing smoke out the side. ( I kinda figure that is the problem ) She did tell me they think weak batterys cause module problems sometimes. So I took the battery out and hooked it up to the tender charger and it took just a little bit for it show charged. I am fixing to take both modules out and send them to Wire Plus today. I think I am going to shorten some the wires on the other plugs to make it look better. I bought the deutch crimpers back when I did the original wiring and always thought I could have shortened those wire a little, and now I have the time to do it again! At least it didn't shut down on me away from home like the ECH did. I was still in the driveway pointed towards the spot it sits in the garage. Lots better than sitting on the side of the interstate .

I'll let you all know what we find,,, hopefully to save you all this headache.

Have a great weekend,
Ray

Heard from Wire plus this afternoon

The Switch module was "Bad". The black plastic looking thing that was smoking and stinking at the same time. The power module was still good , the one with the metal bracket on it. They didn't say what they thought was wrong with it , just that it really stunk up the shop when it was tested.

Then I was informed that it would be very possibly the second week of November before they would have a new switch module ready because of one of the parts in it is on back order from who ever makes it.

It will give me time to give the old scooter a good shine up.

Wires Plus Kit Fried

I had the same thing happen to my WP kit over a year ago. My bike still isn't right. I don't want to sell, I just want it fixed right. It has been so unreliable since installing the kit.

Had a similar issue happen to mine last week. Everything seems to work except that the horn is constantly on. I traced the issue to the module and take a look, physical evidence is there. I have not spoken with Wire-Plus yet because they are closed on Monday's. The WirePlus kit is only 6-7 months old, I hope warranty will cover the $250.00 price. If not, i might consider going another route.

Wow. They have my control module for about 2 weeks. It tested bad. Left me stranded. I'm waiting to see if they replace it. Only got 5000 miles on it. Mine looks normal though, yours look likeshit. Keep us posted.

So Wire-plus asked no questions and gave me a RMA number. I asked how long it would take to get a replacement and I was given the answer of about 1.5 weeks. We shall see.
