Scavenger Oil kit

I have been looking at the scavenger oil kit from rogue for a while now. And actually saw it in the How to Service your bike thread. There is also a less expensive one called CORS. Big discussion at work the other day as to if this really works, Yeah we have all seen the pictures of the old oil coming out after the oil has been changed and the new oil back in the tank.

2 questions arose:

1> How much oil does the engine and all its sub components really hold and is there really an extra 20-24 oz in the bike when you drain the oil?? (Is that 2 questions?)

2> Oil comes into the enging from the oil tank. ANd last place before it goes back to the oil tank is the oil filter. Is that really all old oil comimg out with this system or is it a mixture of some old and some new before you see the flow go to only new oil. An anlogy was the swimming pool. Pump in water a one end, pump it out at the other end but in the middle is a mixture of old and new water.

Just a thought.

I am going to try this week using a 2 liter coke bottle to "catch" the oil old" until it runs clean. I would not do this normally because I do not think that much old oil is in the system, but this oil change I am switching from Dino to synthetic.

It's true. I didn't buy any kit, but used a cut up water bottle to channel the old oil away from the frame until I saw the new oil coming out. I use Amsoil 20w50 race oil and it's bright red so it's easy to spot.

I use the CORS systems also (same as rouge but cheaper-but not as cheap as the bottle-all do the same thing). I get somewhere between a half quart and 3/4 quart. There may still be some mix oil in it like you are asking, regardless the crap that comes out is dirty and never hurts to get rid of it with new change. Cheap maintenance item and if done right, no problems or issues of screwing up something.

I scavenge.

I belive how much oil will also depend on if you have an oil cooler installed.

And I think you are right in the assumtion that it is a mixture of both old an new oil being forced through the system. I do like Ray said and just top it off when done. I don't bother measuring the amount that comes out. I just refill when done.

If you use a good quility oil such as Amsoil and change it every 3000 miles, mixing the small amout of old oil with the new doesn't really matter much.

Haven't had an oil cooler since my old harley days many years ago. But what I do is us a airhose to blow the return line oil to the tank as it's vented. Then I refill tanks after draining it real good and then with the filter off start up the motor and run it till I get good clean oil coming out. It's about 3/4 to 1 quart depending on how long you run it.

I use Amsoil and change it out about every 5000 miles or so sometimes more
