S&S stock air filter?

I looked around the forum to see if this question had been asked already, but no luck finding an answer so here goes.

I pulled my intake cover off and the filter. There was a lot of build up on the inside bottom of the cover where the bottom of the filter sits. I assume this to be the sealing grease used to seal the filter as it matched the grease ring that looped around the inside of the cover.
1) Methinks only a crazy person would use that much grease to seal a filter. Does it really take that much? Is it required at all? Seems like a good seal would take place any way regardless of greasing?

2) I've tried to read the stampings on the rubber of the filter, but it's worn and I can't tell if my filter is stock or not. With a good cleaning, it looks to be red. K&N maybe? I looked around the net to see if the color would give it away, but I'm not sure what color stock s&s air filters were at that time. If the filter is stock, is it washable?

3) The bike is just starting to get a slight popping at decel as I roll off the throttle. As filthy as this filter is, should that reprimand the issue?

Btw, this is on my '08 Mutt with the super G, I believe.

Any help is always appreciated. Thanks all!!

Decel pop is usually in the fuel screw. Either worn or out of adjustment. It can also be an intake leak caused from intake seals or the rubber plug on top of the carburetor. If the plug is cracked or missing, replace with new. You can find them at any auto parts store.
As far as the filter goes, like Curtis said, the K&N is washable, S&S is not. K&N states you can use a light film of their grease around the rubber lip of filter, but is not necessary.
Stock S&S filters are around $19, I believe K&N is at least twice that.

Only filter I could find in stock locally was at the HD shop, had an Uni on the shelf. Got me back on the road this weekend, but plan to go K&N soon. I've invested in them before on different projects and always been a good addition. Never seen the grease seal thing before, though. Didn't seem like it'd be necessary.

Also, Thanks for the decel pop info. Good to know! As usual, ya'll rock!
And just on a side note, I'm pretty sure the cat that had this bike before NEVER changed the oil. I don't get why ppl don't want to take care of their bikes.

S&S makes a filter extension kit, with a wider good filter element. BUY THE KIT !!! :2thumbs:
