I looked around the forum to see if this question had been asked already, but no luck finding an answer so here goes.
I pulled my intake cover off and the filter. There was a lot of build up on the inside bottom of the cover where the bottom of the filter sits. I assume this to be the sealing grease used to seal the filter as it matched the grease ring that looped around the inside of the cover.
1) Methinks only a crazy person would use that much grease to seal a filter. Does it really take that much? Is it required at all? Seems like a good seal would take place any way regardless of greasing?
2) I've tried to read the stampings on the rubber of the filter, but it's worn and I can't tell if my filter is stock or not. With a good cleaning, it looks to be red. K&N maybe? I looked around the net to see if the color would give it away, but I'm not sure what color stock s&s air filters were at that time. If the filter is stock, is it washable?
3) The bike is just starting to get a slight popping at decel as I roll off the throttle. As filthy as this filter is, should that reprimand the issue?
Btw, this is on my '08 Mutt with the super G, I believe.
Any help is always appreciated. Thanks all!!
