Okay here's the scoop by bike is in the shop and I have an few options. So looking for a little advice, so please feel free to chime in. I want a nice streetable cam low to midrange power where I could I use it. People praise the s&s 585 but I hear good things about the woods 590 also. What's your take? Also how do they compare against eachother? What will I be in store for with either?

I have the S&S. No experience with the Woods. The S&S spins the motor up faster, almost as if you have reduced the gearing. I really noticed the difference when I put mine in, and I recommend it as an upgrade.

Sic,
I don't see alot of responses that address the differences in the 2 cams you asked about and I think its because they are likely very similar and so it probably boils down to either your preference of the shop wrench's. I am no expert on this topic but I too went through a long period of trying to get the right cam to unlock even more power. Should I get .585 or .600 or .640? Back and forth, reading every post and thread i could find. Being on the back side of choosing an S&S .660 installation, let me share what I've figured out.

1. S&S is an awesome product, great engine work with lots of history of performance and reliability and also a stand up company that stands behind their product.

2. That after you make the change out there will still be loads of fine tuning to optimize the upgraded cam. Which is expensive and dangerous if you aren't living next to John Sachs or Will Weldon, or you're a fairly good mechanic yourself.

3. Upgrading the cam means more necessary maintenance and care since it's gonna increase wear on the motor more so than the stock cam would've.

4. The cam upgrade also adds expenses like less milage, increased tire turnover (Avon cobras excluded since they turn over too often regardless), and in my case increased starter work load making the need to upgrade it.

5. Lastly these bikes are pretty bad ass right out of the factory and smoke most other bikes on the road (crotch rockets and BMW touring bikes excluded).

So be sure this is what you want, and if experience is a good guide just ask Raywood about all the engine upgrades he has done, because I am pretty sure he is still running the stock cam with enough miles on that thing to circle the globe or something like that.

With all the above perspective I do have to admit that I love cracking my throttle and shooting like a bullet down the road while trying to hold on to my bike, it is just way more headaches for those rare opportunities to ride really aggressively. Good luck.

I don't know anyone that have used both cams. I have the .585 and am happy with the increase of of power etc without the need to go crazy with additional upgrades and my gas mileage has not suffered like some.

I think it was V that has the W8 .590 Woods cam he might be able to give u some insight on it.

Both are good street-able cams.

Here is two links read all >http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/motor/22390-585-600-cam.html

I would be tempted to try the Woods Cam...

Call Bobby.

He knows inside that cam area really damn well. Just be prepared to have answers to his questions.

Also, buy his springs and listen to what he has to say about lifters. He will tell you how to adjust it all.

There is an unbelievable depth of knowledge available there.

You guys are great, thanks for all the input. I was kinda up in arms about which one. The woods cam I was thinking of was the w6h I believe that's the one that's supposed to have great torque. But the 585 might be my safest bet...atleast for now. I won't be doing any of the jetting or tuning myself Brian at valley racing has it and he's gonna handle all that with the upgrade. But if anyone else has any experiences or input feel free to put it out there, I really enjoy reading these posts...thanks.

I would PM V and see how he likes the Woods W8 cam. My memory says it was very similar to the .585 with just a tad more lift.

You are correct W6H more torque and slightly higher HP, W8 Higher HP and higher TQ.

I had a 408G in a 117 twin cam.

It had 100lb/ft of torque off idle to 5700 rpm.

Only had 120lb/ft peak, but damn could it lift the front tire on a full dress HD.

I just put the .585 in mine and started it for the first time a couple days ago, the sound difference is very different from stock. Didn't get any real seat time yet, but the little I have tells me I need to rejet and they are on the way.
I wouldn't think there would be any noticable difference between a .585 and .590, though there is between a .600 and .585

Ker,

What cam did you have before as stock, .546 or .569??? my 06 should have the .569 (I must check it) I wonder if in fact I have the .569 there would be much difference.... ?

I believe it was the .546, its not marked at all so I'm not sure. The cam rise from one to the other is not much different, but the degrees when the exhaust and intake start are. I believe you can see those on S&S website. I measured and wrote the dimensions down if you want to know them! I'm at work right now but can post them later if you want them. I believe you would notice .016 difference on the cam but not .005

My'07 K9 cane with the comp 546. I'm running a custom Black Widow cam with 585 lift. I have more details at home, but the thing is great for me. I also decked the heads, port and polish, new pistons, the usual motor work. Added the TH adjustable ignition to bring everything to life.
