S&S 107 to V111E Engine Swap

Hi guys & gals. I'm looking for a little insight on a problem one of my Big Dog buddies is having.

Has anyone on this forum replaced their original S&S motor with a new S&S motor? Specifically the V111E? The reason I ask is my buddy bought an 04 Chopper brand new and managed to get 60K out of the motor before he started getting a pretty annoying vibration at about 3000 rpm. He had the run out checked at the crank and it was way out of spec. He elected to replace his original 107 rather than rebuild it and went with the S&S V111E. He had a mechanic do the install. (Basically a bolt in procedure) except for the electrics, which he worked out very nicely.

The new engine seems to have more vibration than the 107 with the crank problem. The vibration comes on earlier too at about 2000 rpm. Has anyone else experienced this with the V111E motor? The mechanic did not dyno the motor and I suspect that would help some, and my guess is the 111 might by nature vibrate more due to bigger engine displacement, but it shouldn't vibrate this much.

I think my buddy is planning to contact S&S shortly, but thought I would check here first to see if anybody else has experienced this, and if so did you get some resolution to the problem?

Any info. would be greatly appreciated:cheers:

I really don't want to start a revolt! But why the hell would you not rebuild the 107"???? The 107 Super Sidewinder is the equivalent of a 327 Chevy small block! It is one of the greatest motors to ever come out of S&S! When I had questions about an issue with my motor I talked to the S&S tech for about 2 hrs. He then gave me a interesting story. Had the EPA not gone off on pollution control there would not have been a need for the 117". But since the EPA went batshit crazy to produce a power plant with this HP and producing emissions on this level S&S had to create a bigger
Motor that is how the 117" was born. He said with out a dought the 107" is the holy grail of the S&S line! Maybe this tech was on to much Xanex that day, I can just go by what the factory tells me. He also said, S&S rule of thumb on the 107" is cu.in =Hp + or - 3%. My stock motor Dynoed with in the 3%!

It had to be very disappointing to spend that much money and still have the vibration problem. Does he still have the 107? Is he interested in selling it? Good luck and let us know how it worked out.

If he did not change the ignition it might need to be adjusted.

Timing curve might be different. Betting it is pinging.

Thanks all for your comments. I know the V111E ingition module is in the nose cone and once the electrics were worked out, the thunderheart was eliminated. He's planning to get some tech help from S&S and he is going to have the motor dyno tuned, so hopefully it will smooth things out. Thanks for your comments on that RC Add1ct:up:

Also good suggestion 03pitdog on checking for frame cracks, I remember several years ago a post concerning vibration and the frame was discovered cracked.

I love my 107, but my buddy had 60k on the motor and it mostlikely could be rebuilt just fine, but knowing something about metal fatigue combined with dumping big $$$ to rebuild it, it made sense to go new. Honestly, we were more concerned with tying in the new electrics on the motor/EFI carb and still keep all the original controls. The electrics turned out quite well, but no fine tuning has been done yet.

Thanks again for everybody's imput. Big Dog Biker Forum continues to be a fantastc resource:cheers::2thumbs::cheers:

I have the new 111 in my new KMW, very strong motor compared to my 117. This thing scares me. I had 95,000 miles on my 05 chopper and wish I never got rid of it

My AIH has the 111 s&s. It has enough power to make the belt skip no matter what you do.....and the pulleys are fine.

Haha I'm with you liferider I got both the 107 and the 117 and the 107 is way smoother with more 2x the mileage and both stock from BDM factory difference in power is very negligible to the point where it doesn't matter.

I want to upgrade the ignition in both bikes but I'm having a hard time fixing something that ain't broke yet.
