RV = giant hole to throw money into

In 2005, I purchased a used 1998 Fleetwood Bounder Class A motorhome for $21,000.00 it was in great shape but had 50K miles and had a 454 Vortex engine. I have decided to sell it and my friend who ownes the local RV dealership went over the numbers with me. It is still in great shape, I traded another friend who does body work for a wet sanding, compounding & wax job on the RV, for one of the kids old dirt bikes they have out grown. The inside is in really good conditions. I have put 22k miles on it. Now, remember this is a lisc vehicle so it goes by NADA Kelly Blue Book for auto loans. The number I can get it looks like is $7800.00. That's a loss of $13,200.00 in 78 months = a loss of $169.23 per month depreciation. CRAP, talk about something NOT holding any retail value at all!!!!!!!! :bang: But better to cut my losses now. Insurance renewal is in 60 days and that will be another $850.00 per yr. Scarey thing is The guy who purchased the unit new in 1999 paid $65,000.00 (he gave me ALL the paperwork even the original sales invoice) and I paid him $21,000.00 he lost $ 44,000.00 in 84 months = $523.80 per month in depreciation.

Dam that sucks!! What you need...is to be the guy buying it from you!

Bikes are not much better(mine at least):
Original owner paid $29k + financing
I paid ~$12K
So lets say $20K lost. He rode maybe 1500 miles. $13/mile + gas!! Ouch. Even if he put good miles on it still a hefty loss. :(

when the economy went to shit so did the value of toys. great if you're looking to buy...sucks if you're selling.

Toy's are expensive. That's why I am culling the herd! Got rid of 1-8Hp go-cart, 4 mini bikes YZ 50,KTM 50 Yz80, KTM 250. kids stopped racing so I got rid of my bike I was tracking them with on practice laps. Sell RV,& my 18' aluminum duck boat with a 20 HP Brigs Vanguard Go-Devil, and Motor guide trolling motor. I am keeping both my HD Ultra Classic , the Big Dog & the Malibu Responce. Just keeping everything running was a full time job. Forget to put Stable in the fuel and it's a BIG, OH SHIT! I'm 46 yrs old and it's time to enjoy my life with fewer toys but more quality of time!

Damn truth about a RV. I have a 5th wheel that's not worth half of what I still owe on it. Keep hoping a damn tree will fall right thru the middle of it. It one of the stupidest things I ever let my wife talk me into

So, your seller lost $5.83 per month in depreciation, you willingly paid him $22K, and you were thinking "too bad for him, but I got a really good deal!"
Now your buyer is going to take advantage of $1.69 per month in depreciation, and you are thinking "too bad for me, this is unfair!"

Depreciation eventually terminates, but it never rebounds.

Not to bad for me. I am saying, it is a hit though. RV's or any toy. If you can't afford the hit, you can't afford the toy period. I am amazed the rv's value didn't stablize around $10,000.00 range. With boats a new Master craft cost $60,000.00 . A 1998 Mastercraft Pro-star 190 can be picked up for $10,000.00 and a 1985 Mastercraft Pro-star 190 are going for about $9000.00. Usually there's a point where something drops down to and somewhat levels out and yes this object is worth this amount. I just was shocked that the RV had dropped to $7800.00

and it wasn't $1.69 it was $169.00 differance of $20.28 per year VS $2028.00 per year.

I always thought an RV would be nice to have, but couldn't justify spending so much $$$ on something that was going to sit for 90% of the time. Actually looked recently, but rented one for our upcoming trip.

The 3 F's. If it fucks, floats or fly's, rent it.......
+1

I have had a Fifthwheel, Toyhauler travel trailer, and now selling my 3rd motorhome. On all but the toy hauler I got my ass kicked, But the kids sure have some great memories so it has been worth it.
