Running out of options.. HELP!!

Thanks Bill for doing some extra inquiring for me. This morning, I D/C the battery, took off the coil cover and checked the ignition connections, pulled the EHC off and re checked/re greased the serial connections, pulled the EFI controller in case the there was something in that connection. I even put a small pad under the controller connector just to make sure its seated.

Once I got it all back together, re connected the battery. Did start procedure. EVERYTHING NORMAL!! EHC lights good, turn signal works.

We got on the bike and headed into town to the HD dealer for the ride. On the way the engine still did its cut out thing. Engine light would flash on, engine would miss/cut out for a split second then come back. A second later the engine light would go off. It was running so I left it alone.

At the dealership we walked around, talked some shit and decided to go for our own ride. When I went to start her up. Key on, hit run.... Nothing!! Spoke to one of the shop guy (old school mech), he mentioned that sometimes the wiring can get "pinched" inside the hand control. Especially with the internal wiring system. So I pulled the right hand controller apart and sure enough. There are 2 wires from the brake lever that connect to the button board, they were worn to near breaking off and looked suspiciously like they were touching. They were TINY little connections. So we (myself and my lovely wife) walked of to Lowes with the parts. Brought a butane soldering iron, my pocket knife and the smallest drill bits they had (1/32? for a dremel). Them in the car park we proceeded to strip the wires off, clean the connections and re solder them back together. Actually it looks like a better job than factory. We got it back together and she started up first pop. (forgot to take pics, sorry guys)

I thought that might have been the reason for the intermittent engine cut out, but on the way home it did it again. Only once though, but once is enough.
At least the list of problems is getting smaller.

I think my next jobs as you you've mentioned Bill, will be to check more connections. Any earths or even + connections Ill pull and clean with a wire brush and see how that goes.

Slowly but surely....
You seem like a pretty good wrench Dean  and I have full confidence in you ....few more tweeks and she should be good to go .... By the way I have ruled out the EHC as being your problem .... Keep us updated

Hey Deano.
I know this may sound all kinds of crazy. But when did you last change your plug wires? I once had an issue just like yours with the running bad and stalling. It ended up being a broken plug wire inside the boot. It would make good contact at times and other not so much. I would give them the once over. It's easy and cheap. Make sure they're good to go or just buy some new ones and give that a go. My engine light would come on and the whole nine yards. Try that and let us know.

I had the same problem .... It took a few weeks before I ran it down to the plug wires .... my motor was cutting out ...emergency flashers going on, all kinds of weird shit...

Good call Mike

I changed them out about 1500miles ago. But I did have to cut and use the old ones connectors as the new ones werent the 90deg type. I guess it is very possible my fix job could be at fault. I see on ebay they have 12mm, I used 8mm on mine, could that be an issue?

Ill add that to the check list

Great, sounds like you're getting the bugs worked out or getting bugs on the scoot which sounds good to me...:D:2thumbs:

This may or may not work. Run a remote ground from engine to frame. Whatever you cleaned and all of a sudden the box lit the light panel, where the two lights came on as per, I'm guessing, 'systems good?' Then, it sounds like a main ground problem. To back up your ride, to stop the sputtering/engine stop, that remote ground would clear those problems is the guess [poor ground]? Take a file to the frame. Find bare metal. File that cable side that touches the frame to ground. Remove battery posts. File those fresh. Use electric grease on the battery post ends.

If there is a bad winker side and it acts up again, take a bare pair of pliers, stretch one end to the winker base, the other end of the pliers that will reach a ground on the bike. See if this begins to wink the side again? You have a bad ground found, where something like this way is a fast way to see if you need to ground the winkers better?

My original intention was to go out and warm up the oils to change it this arvo. I just kept riding. Was a really good day for it. I got back, changed out the Trans oil, Primary oil and adjusted the Pri chain and drained most of the Engine oil. I had to go buy a oil filter gripper so I can remove it, then Ill get the Scavenger (thanks to Mickeetwo) onto it and flush the old crap out in the morning.

Did you go over the plug wires?
Naa havent touched them yet. Ill ride it again tomorrow and look into it. Deffinitly considering replacing though. Want to give it a few miles to try isolate it. I almost want it to do it again.

LOL. Yea I think I got it all. I figured with all the shit that was stuck to it, I may as well clean it out as it'll be less crap floating around in the primary.

Ive read a few recent post with Dogs VR's going out. Ive had so many little faults on this bike and at one point was 100% sure it was the EHC. I mean with all these faults at the same time, what else could it be? Turns out, my EHC is fine. Mainly the VR and grounding issues, loos connectors and the like. I think right now, I have everything fixed (KNOCK WOOD).

Get out and ride Dean  you earned it ...
RGR THAT!! Did another 30 miles last night and heading out with Mickeetwo this morning (Weather permitting).

Had to re solder the hand brake light switch to get that doing yesterday. Gave her a quick wipe down (kinda scared to get her wet now lol) and now shes good to go. (knock wood)

Feels good right Kiwi! Good job. Makes it even sweeter that you've knocked it down on your own.
