Thanks for all the replies. I can count on members from this forum to give some solid advice. All the bikes looks great. I am leaning toward the RMD and Karata becasue they are BD specific with little mods to fit. Now it is just the price. At one time we had several shops giving members really good prices on these units. Are there any shops left still willing to work with us?

As Alhall has told me...

unless your drag racing or doing a crap load of hole shots you don't need the bearing support. Furthermore, if you don't have one, that's one less thing to do maintance on.

Can't imagine that the Baker wouldn't be the most BD specific since they made the tranny for BD and the DSSC is there design!! :eek:

But have to agree that Karata is a very clean setup. :D

There's nothing wrong with the bearing support as long as you maintain it. The biggest issue especially with S&S motors is the crankshaft runout. Ask anyone in racing and if your using a S&S crank you should always have it balanced prior to install. This is a step that does not get done on a production motor. So even with perfect alignment the bearings are still fighting the runout issue.But who knows they may still last a long time. I'm just repeating a conversation I had with with one of the techs at Primo prior to ordering my unit. Another thing you will have to watch for is that the belt will need to be replaced a little sooner on units with outer bearing supports due to the fact they cant flex as much with the drivetrain which is the whole idea behind drag racing.

The Baker setup is the best for the Big Dogs. Anyone remember all the posts about mainshafts breaking. Well, hook up a 3" belt drive to any engine over stock configuration, and see what happens! No matter what, use a bearing support. RMD is an okay system, and the only one that comes in chrome. By far, Baker is the best quality.

Just a short note to tell you this is the jim from karata. We have designed and mfg. (USA) in our location for the last 37 years and we do not copy.For your information we released for sale the BigDog 2005-2008 RSD Belt drive at the Cinci dealer trade show in Feb.2006.The other guys you speak of are the knockoffs and between them they do not have the knowledge of Karata in belt drives,if the 2 you speak of that have problems with my product (if this is for real) then they should contact us and have the problem solved.We do not mfg. outboard plates on a as called in basis but when production time is available.
The other members should know who we are.

Welcome Jim and nice to see a mfg. step up to these accusations. I have always thought of Karata as a stand up company even though I went with a different brand on my dog.

Outboard Bearing Supports are very important on late model tranmission as the main shafts are much longer and when the power is applied the shafts want to tweek.Their are differant designs on OBS and one must be carefull when buying (examples) what size bearings are used in the system,where are the bearings placed,what holds the bearings in place,are the bearings secured with .095" snap rings,is there a steel carrier pressed into the bearing to load or is it a slip fit,is there a counterbore on the outboard plate for a steel carrier to lock the shafts in position,are there stands from the outboard plate to the engine/trans plate,Not Recomended as we want the 2 shafts to work independenley of the chassis.As you can see after reading this there is much to learn about belt drive systems.

Well I see that the mods edited out noname's BS comments.

Myself personally have heard nothing but negative about the Baker setup.

I have heard that the best of the best are Primo and Katara.

And if I call it how it comes... you walk in here and start spouting off. No intro. Some BS in your profile...
