RPM

I have a 06 K-9 with 16K miles on it. I was coming back home today and the rpm,which normally runs 2.5 to 3 jumped to 4 to 5 rpm at same speed. There isn't a different sound coming from the motor, however, it was trying to stall at a red light. Any ideas?

Is your clutch properly adjusted?

Did you do anything else to the bike?

Thanks stlmikie. I think it is electric. I just replaced the battery and I do keep it on a tender. Today I went for a short ride and had trouble starting the bike after a quick stop on a gas station.

remember that it takes a ride of at least 20 miles without stopping to build the battery back up after cranking. if the battery is weak to begin with, there may not be enough reserve to properly crank and start the motor. to be on the safe side, push in the compression releases manually before you try to crank and always keep the bike on a tender when not riding, if at all possible.

Hey guys,
Does the tach pick up use the crank sensor? If so, it might just need cleaning or replacing. That might also explain the hard starting/stalling.

Breaking it down....

The tach reads 4-5k same speeds - DO YOU FEEL THE ENGINE ACTUALLY RUNNING/REVING AT THAT SPEED? or is it just the tach that gives you that read out?

IF YOU FEEL THE ENGING RUNNING AT THOSE REVS and YOU ARE NOT REALLY ACCELRATING...then - like Gas mentioned either you are running in a lower gear OR your clutch is not necessarily engaging correctly.

Next, IF YOUR ENGINE IS NOT ACTUALLY REVING TO THOSE RPM's and you just see the tach READING 4-5K then its either the SENSOR or TACH itself.

That's a good start....take it on from there - MOST IMPORTANTLY - do NOT RUN AT THOSE RPM's considering the bike is new the WARRANTY POLICE WILL COME AFTER YOU - :lol: :lol: :lol: Report it to BDM and your dealer IMMEDIATELY - NO I'm NOT KIDDING - do THAT NOW!!!!

(Sorry - I'm not getting the electric/battery part of it, and the relevance to high RPM's - same speed...Sorry again)

Sounds like you might have a blown fuse. Have you checked your 40 amp fuse that's under your seat. Mine was blown and bike ran like crap and wouldn't charge battery. You said bike was hard to start after short ride and you just put in new battery was it hard to start because of dead battery? If not fuse maybe VR?
