Roland Sands Velocity Stack!!!- First Mod Ordered and I need some assistance.

I am pumped up about finally being able to modify my Mastiff. I ordered the Velocity Stack from RS primarily because I like the simple looks and big intake.

My questions are: What do I need to do to in regards to "jetting"?

Does anyone else ride with one and are the benefits good?

I am taking on the challenge of doing all of the mod's myself....and I am not mecanical so if there is anyone who could throw out some nuggets of information/details....it would be greatly appreciated.

No filter....just a screen. I am going to see how it works and may put some type of filter together myself.

I like the idea of getting as much air as possible but dont want any dirt going into my engine.

Had one on the Mastiff - had a rough time dialing her in. PM me your address I will send you a "fine" screen that will sit behind the original. Looks good and will act as a decent filter.

Just remembered..you will need to remove the bolw vent plug as the mounting bracket will block the air flow.

You can also tap into the mounting spacers, insert a 90 degree barb and connect your vent hose to it.

I had Velocity Stacks on my Mastiff. They looked Kick Ass and they worked great for me with the XXX Carb. I tried them with the Big Air PSI and could never tune the Bike right because there is not filter just a screen. If you can keep the rain out you should be good to go. I have heard some will drill a 1/4 inch hole on the bottom to let the water drain should you get caught in a rain storm. I know Roland Sand are different but same priciple, more air. Good Luck

I went through a few different set ups. The stack in my avatar is the first one Trotta made of this model and the screen mesh was too small and actually chocked the motor… I since went to a different model he makes, identical to yours.

For jetting it depends. Can’t tell if you have any mods now – if you have pipes, you’re probably around 76 /32 and you might be OK, but won’t know until you install and ride. I’m running a Mukuni which allows you to change jetting by raising or lowering a needle, and I had to go up one notch, which is equivalent to one jet size up. What is critical in determine your jets will be the size of the mesh in the screen.

For a filter, after a lot of trial and error, the best thing I found was at Home Depot. Go to where they have home air filters and in that area they have “pond filters” used to filter water in large outdoor ponds. They are dark green and come in sheets about 2’ X 3’ for about $12. Just cut out a round piece in place between the screen and carb. OK to give a light coat of paint on the outside, in the avatar I painted it black and on the new one painted it silver to match the screen – can’t even tell it’s there. Like any good filter, it looks solid, but when held up to sunlight you can see through. Totally breathable and much better than running open.

If you use the pond filter you can also ride in the rain (I have) no problem. But I also carry a rain sock. It’s a small nylon type cover that goes over the stack, Trotta has them for about $20 – but I only use it when washing the bike. You can ride with it on, but obviously it will take performance.

I just installed a Roland Sands Velocity Air cleaner on a friends bike...(08) mastiff. The new backing plate did not have anything for the hose from the rear jug so i added a "breather element" filter and rerouted the hose to that. I did pull the bowl vent plug after I test drove the bike after installation cuz it ran horrible but after pulling the bowl vent plug it ran much better. Alot of people are quick to rejett but pulling the plug should be the first thing u check, of course other factors are involved but removing the plug takes a few seconds. Also the gasket between the carb and backing plate that came with the air cleaner was real thin so i made another to fill in the space without overtightening the backing plate. If u PM me i have a picture of the breather element to show u what i mean..good luck

Thanks for all of the information guys. I will see how some of the details play out once I get the V stack installed and will post up my progress. I am pretty sure it will take me 4x's longer to get in all done as this will be WAY outside of my comforts zone mechanically.

Well, so much for trying to do the V Stack on my own. What a cluster fuck. "Plug and play" when speaking about BD's is like saying Astrophysics is "color by numbers".

I take total blame for some parts. BUT....the RS V Stack was sent to me with the wrong "breather bolts". I didn't realize this detail until after taking the stock air cleaner stuff off. I had no idea I would be putting the BD air cleaner back on and so when I did the bike idled at 2500 rpm and then made a knarly "POP". I assume it has something to do with air to fuel mixture but I didn't touch anything other than the bolts when taking all the air cleaner shit off.

Bolt on components should be just that. WTF? Another very annoying detail I noticed during this excercise....that is, my air cleaner was fucking filthy. Weird, because I just paid Strokers $450 bucks for the 2500 mile check up. I only had 2000 miles on the bike when I took it in....they had the bike for a week and didn't even change the air filter?!!? Is that normal???? If I shit money then these details wouldn't bother me. Does anyone have any suggestions on who can service my BD in Dallas?

I figure after this experience I should leave it to the pro's but if I am ripped off one more time I am gonna throw a gasket. Which is what I think was that "POP" i heard on my bike earlier.

Time for some beers......and then some real drinks.
