Rode the dog through a tornado

Hey guys, haven't been very active the past 6 months or so (got a couple of builds that are sucking up all my freetime). What the hell happend to the other site???

My buddies and I got caught up in that nasty storm system coming back from daytona on Friday. We rode from key west, pit stop in daytona, and then back up to knoxville. We had to call a trailer in miami to pick us up in atlanta because TN was getting hit with ice storms and even we aren't that crazy.

Anyway we were screaming through the rain all day and somewhere outside daytona a guy rolls into the gas station tells us there's a flood and tornado warning for right where we were standing, so we start haulin some serious ass to get the F out of D. We switch directions and head west hoping to get out of the rain and if that sumbitch didn't touch down behind us.

I'll be the first to admit, I ride like a puss in the rain, scares the shit outta me, but with mother nature on my ass, it's WOT I don't care what the conditions are. I was surprised at how well a ridgeback does in the rain, esp at 95 mph

Been reading threads for years now about not getting your dog wet and this and that never bought it...till now. After that little encounter every light on my bike strobes even with the key out. The icing on the cake though, is that when i turn the key the bike starts right up...no button required. I kinda dig this new feature

good post - sounds like you need to do some drying out and some shrink wrapping

You know, i've been thinking about rewiring the whole thing. I don't like the idea of not being able to fix her on the side of the road with parts from autozone.

Also make sure its in neutral. may want to pull or disconnect the battery all together.

And from what I have heard the cost in changing over the wiring isn't in the wiring itself, its in the changing of the controls and bars.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I heard those EHCs aren't real friendly either. If I did rewire it I would just drop em. along with the blinkers any other non-essentials. I could fab some new bars but then I'd have to get controls. Can't see it being too expensive, but you know how these projects go... if i'm going to rewire the bike might as well throw in a new ignition...and if i'm going to do that, might as well have that head work that i've been meaning to do, and then the carb, pipes, and so on. yeah, maybe i'll just start with a good shrink wrap job

Yeah, the money is when you get to the controls. how custom and nice do you want them. Certainly some generic looking HD controls won't be too pricey but its all in what ya want.

Got caught in the same storm - the worst we encountered hit while having breakfast at Denny's in St. Augustine.

I ride like a puss in the rain too, and to make it even more interesting, this was my first ride on the 'Dog, had never ridden a wide rear tire until this trip. Did NOT come close to 95, but it felt comfortable and stable on the slab, even with the severe wind gusting all phreaking day until we pulled in to Savannah.

After dark, a couple lights on the speedo unit kind of glowed, and there was some fog inside the glass next day, but other than that no problems. Renewed my confidence that the Niner will be able to handle Alaska when it finally at long last gets shipped home next month.

The Dragon may not be a submarine, but it's not too shabby as a water dog (Cheasepeake Bay Retreiver spent his life with me)...

Yeah we were at destination Daytona when that weather broke. Should have seen all the bikes tryin to get out of that parking lot with the cops making you go out 1 direction :loony: ( Stupid Daytona Police ):loony: . We said
F-it!! Didnt know where to go if a tornado had droppped. Glad it didnt that would have sucked seeing 500 bikes suked up & sent out as projectiles:(

We did lose the top on my trailer on Sat though. Had to stop in St. Augustine & make a deal on a new one, & couldnt pick it up until Monday cause they had to lay 1 more row of E-Track.
Oh well shit happens
