Rocker Box Bolt Length

Energy One
I got back to working on my '05 chopper, 117 cubic inch. The front cylinder head developed an oil leak at the head gasket next to the oil passage.
I'm replacing the head gasket and decided to go ahead and replace the base gasket as well. The bike only has 10,200 miles and the cylinder look better than great. No need whatsoever to replace rings or. Anyway, I was putting it back together, came time to torque down the TP Engineering Rocker Boxes. I was surprised to see the socket head bolt lengths were ridiculously short they were only about 4 threads being grabbed. Ridiculous! I purchased longer socket head bolts cut to a length that would allow approximately .160 space to bottom of threads. I'm now grabbing about 6 threads more. Only holding with 4 threads in aluminum is obviously failure of BDM to provide a well built motorcycle engine. Now I must assume the rear is the same. It's a good thing I still love working on bikes. I've only had the bike 5 weeks or so. I wanted to jump into it. Any excuse to do so put a smile on my face. I'll have it done tomorrow no rush. I worked on my girlfriends Sportster today. Gotta keep her happy. I installed heated glove/vest controller for her.

Good catch Kevin. Some one may have replaced the bolts before you worked on it. I am sure you are about to be lectured on the virtues of changing the rocker assembly to all S&S parts. Good luck and post up some pics of the bike when you can.

How did the top of valve stems look. Was the wear from the rockers in the center?
