RIP KIT

Hey guys. Well I installed the RIP kit the weekend before last. The kit is truly a plug n play system. I started by pulling seat and tank off, removed battery, side covers and then the ehc. I pulled all connectors under the tank loose and was able to fish out the factory front harness, then removed the rear harness. The rear harness was very minimal and very little to do. Once all factory harnesses were removed I ended up using a coat hanger to feed down the backbone to the insert point. I ended up taping half of the harness into one bundle then the same with the other half. It was a little bit of a chore to get them fed through, but took my time and walked away for another beer once it pissed me off. Once I got the harness through I let it sit and moved to mount the module, mine wouldn't work as they designed it to be because I had made a new seat. So I ended up pulling the battery box and modified it so I could mount the module on the bottom side below the factory ehc location. Once I had that in place I ran the back/lower section of wiring to their dedicated spots. Then connected all the upper harness JST connectors at backbone, when I did I had a little bit of a hard time getting all the harness close enough for the tank to fit, just had to get it all laid as close to the backbone as I could and spread out so there was nothing bunching up in one spot. But I got it situated and reassembled everything. I started bike and rode a few miles and came back to recheck everything.

I didn't have left rear lights or a speedo. So I started checking my light issue and found I had no ground. So I started chasing down my ground for the left rear lamps and the ground was actually ran to the speedo ground. I cut the ground wire and contacted Jason to make sure I was correct and he confirmed that was my issue. So I connected the two grounds to the main harness grounds and retested everything. All worked perfectly.

The only thing I would like to see is a pin location for the wiring at the module so if I ever have a short or wire issue I know where to go, and during install there are two red wires that run together with one eyelet that is labeled (CB) and took me a bit to figure out it went to the circuit breaker. But that could of been my stupidity also.

I rode all week with the kit on and probably 400 miles or so. So far everything is working perfectly fine, I have no complaints on the system once I got the ground issue lined out. As far as 12mo/12k miles from now, heat, rain, etc... Like was posted previously, If I have any issues then you guys will all know and hear straight from me what they are.

One thing I am curious about, is if this module does happen to fail at some point, how much is a replacement and how about the availability of the replacement.? Oh I have some pictures, they are kinda blury I noticed, but I'll try to figure how to get them posted as well.

Hey Dan
Module replacement is a phone call away to KMW, Wild Steed Worx or Thunderheart.
Thunderheart has been building this module for some time and they have no plans of stopping in the future at this point.

Good to know. I just started thinking about a replacement availability if needed the other day and was curious about that. Thanks.

Do you know how long TH has been making these?

RETIRED
I just sent Matt at KMW an e-mail asking if he thought it prudent to send mine back for testing before I install it. I bought mine as soon as they offered them for sale on here. I would like to install my Rip Kit as soon as possible, but don't want to have a problem with no way to trouble shoot it."

This e-mail was sent on( Tue 9/30/2014 9:13 AM) and resent just a few minutes ago with a read receipt. Still waiting on a reply. I guess KMW is real busy this time of the year. Hopefully, they will reply soon.

Matt answered my email and said he would be more than glad to bench test my rip kit. I shipped yesterday and it is supposed to be there Saturday.

That's cool, and good insurance.
But how does he bench test them? Did he say? It does seem that they do want to help and stand behind their work. I am sure they are busy just like anyone else.

Currently they don't bench test them.
But they are in the process of building a test bench and should have it done within the next 2 weeks.
