Replaced EHC and now speedo not working properly

'03 Chopper - Did about 1400 miles in the Ozark's and on the ride home the electrical just quit at 75mph. Then after a few seconds it came back on......then off again.....then on again.....etc. Was able to leave it overnight to go home and get trailer to get it home.

I bought a new EHC (because that what all the posts I read pointed towards) and replaced the old one. All that went well and when I fired the bike back up everything seemed to work until I got on the road. Even though the analog speedo was lighting up and I could see the digital total miles.

Upon more reading, I performed the 2 mile calibration and it failed. Did it a second time and it failed also. That's when I really started paying attention to all the threads and what I was seeing. Every thread I found stated that when the key was turned to the on position, that the arm would move from 0 to 60 and back to 0 (clockwise). Mine does not. Mine goes from 0 backwards (IE counterclockwise) then back to 0.

I have rechecked every EHC connection and they all seem to be fine. I did see where the speedo wires and some other wires merge together just before the harness to the EHC so I'm making the assumption that the red/black are not swapped because those other wires would be as well and I'm not seeing anything else going backwards. For example left signal/right blinkers or right signal/left blinkers.

The only other thing is that my headlight is not working. However, that has been ongoing but was working before the EHC replacement.

I'd gladly take it to someone to look at but I can't find anyone in/near Birmingham AL that will touch it.

For the headlight I would check the socket that it plugs into. The speedometer does sound like the wires might be backwards from the sensor?? Is there any way to temporarily switch those wires only then go for a short ride. If that fixes it then switch them at the sensor. Not sure if you have a wiring diagram. Check out the next post.

Turned out that the headlight had just come unpluged :crazybitch:

I was able to rig the wiring and swap the red & black. When I did that the speedo didn't get any power and wouldn't light up.

Originally I just did the Speedo wires. But since you asked, I went back and tried the Speedo sensor wires as well.
Swapping the red/black had no effect. The arm still goes counterclockwise

Your original failure (loosing electric power at 75mph) may not have been an EHC issue. I would check the frame grounds for loose or dirty connections. If no improvement reinstall the old EHC and see what happens.

Everyone here knows exactly what I'm about to say...rewire the whole bike and toss the ehc. I had mine done by Dave Welch @ Chopper City, Jacksonville fl and have had absolutely no problems at all.

I suspect that your electrical problem damaged the speedo as well. It too is an electronic device subject to electrical caused malfunctions.

When you say it failed the 2 mile calibration, can you give more detail.
