Replace compression realeases

I searched the forums and did not find the info I needed , I believe my rear cylinder release is sticking , you can hear and see the air come out of it . it also has a split in the rubber cover, sometimes it starts fine sometimes it sticks.
I thought it was the wiring but now I believe its the release itself

Does anyone know how much they cost and a install directions would be great.

I had someone coming to buy it today but I called it off because of the starting issue , hE WAS PISSED BUT I DIDNT WANT TO SELL IT UNLESS ITS GOOD TO GO,PLEASE HELP

it could just be a carbon build-up and could just need a good cleaning. the boot is more for making it water-resistant. there is a special socket that fits the CR but some have made them to fit themselves.

would I really need the kit ?

If its carbon build up , I imagine it would have to be taken apart to be cleaned?

Just tried it again and it was fine , who knows , I appreciate the help I would hate to have to buy the kit etc.. knowing that I am selling it.

I would remove them and clean them off with some stuff, and then reinstall.

it they work sometimes and just hanging up, cleaning the build up should cur the problem.

lol I tried that this morning, guy was coming out today and that's when I noticed them sticking so I told him and he said forget it,lol

But after reading everyones advise here , I tried the penetrating fluid just sprayed it in the whole and it seeped in and has been starting great since , hope it works and hope that doesn't do any harm to anything??

more then likely it will be fine... BUT penetrating oil in the cylinder is not the best for the oil. I would run the bike after to make sure and burn it all out of the release and then cylinder

I did let it Idle for 10 minutes or so a few times yesterday and will do the same today . the bike wont hit the road without an oil change first.

Then I am sure your fine. the oil change would be just being paranoid with a penetrating oil. But better safe the sorry.

Penetrating oil will not end up in the cylinders through the compression release. It's normal practice to lube the CR any time you have the opportunity to do so. Such as, having the Rocker box apart for an oil leak, that would be a perfect time to pull the rubber boots off, lube the plunger, and install new rubber boots. The rubber boots are only $7 for the pair. Another good practice is to push the plunger down by hand every now and then. Just place your finger on top of them with motor not running, and push them down a few times. This will help to make them last longer.

The penetrating oil will go inside the plunger of the compression release.
It's important to have to keep contamination out, such as dirt and water. You might be able to install new with rocker boxes installed. If not, you will have to remove the top cover at least to gain access to them.

penetrating oil would mix with air/fuel mixture, be somewhat burned, and then expelled through the exhaust. only way it would get into the oil tank would be if the oil rings were allowing blow-by, then it would be time to rebuild the motor.

I have a crack in the boot as well and that's the one I sprayed the fluid into , it seeped in and when I started the bike there was some smoke coming from the exhaust up buy that cylinder .
I have been starting several times a day since and it seems to be fine now and although I cant get my finger in there on the 04 Pitbull I made a little tool with a blunt end on it so I can push down on the plunger every now and then , like you suggest

that sounds like you need to a) tighten the flange nuts b) replace the exhaust gaskets c) both

It was very little smoke but I will check them out , I just put that exhaust on last season, they probably do need to be tightened, Thanks

if you just put them on last season and you haven't re-tightened them, they probably are a little loose; this would also cause a little excess decel pop. the gaskets are a wire mess so if there is a leak, they will rust and wear out a little faster due to constant heat and when first cranked, expulsion of sweat/moisture. use care and don't over tighten them :2thumbs:
