Removing Neck Stem from Triple Tree

I'm getting my triple trees chromed and have them disassembled except for the neck stem in the upper triple tree. I tried taking a wrench to it due to the indentations in the stem. Is this thing pressed in the upper or threaded?? I'm about fed up with trying to get it out and about to just take it to the chrome shop and see if they can just chrome it without removing it.

There should be a 5/16-18 X 3/8" set screw on the upper triple tree that needs to be removed so the stem can be separated.

Take a heat gun and try to heat up the triple tree right there at the point where it threads into it and heat up the triple tree and keep as much heat off of the stem bolt. That should make the tree expand should break it loose if rusted or if it has lock tight on it.

Just a double check

I wanted to chrome my stock triple trees and was advised against it because of the "pinch bolt" design. Something about safety or possibly fracturing the chrome. Just want to make sure you will be safe and satisfied. If this isn't a true concern, then I guess I spent extra for my new chrome trees unnecessarily, but thought I would pass along my 2 cents.

Most chrome shops can tape off the stem so it isn't affected by the process. You have to tell them to do it as they might not know. I haven't heard of there being issues with chroming the trees (only that they could be over-chromed making it a pain to get the tubes back in).

After staying up til 3 in the morning, I said f*ck it and just took them to the chrome shop. They're just taping it off and said that they have to do that for most Harley's since they're pressed in.

RIDE IT HARD!!!
Like blacktopper said....check for another screw. They use two screws. One as a lock and one as a jam so the first one doesn't come loose.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Oh well, it's at the chrome shop already. One less thing I have to assemble now I guess.
