Reliabilty of Big Dogs?

Buy the Big Dog

I had a 2006 Deuce, Put $15,000 into it and still could not get it to look good LOL.
I could ride that Deuce 50 miles and my hands would be numb and back hurting. I have rode my BD 13,000 miles total now and love every bit of it.
Only problem I have had out of my BD was a valve guide problem I think it was. Which was probably closely related to something I did. :loony:

Dogs are very reliable - Just look at Ray and his cross country run.

It's true about HD running hot - they actually introduced a "parade switch" that allows you to shut down one cycl in heavy traffic.

I'd buy another dog in a NY minute. Only thing I don't like is the electronics and EHC - but I fixed that pernmently by dumping everything and going hard wire on everything. Runs like a champ ran or shine.

Ray - I was at Carl's in the morning - looked for your bike on the rack and did not see it. Then hung with Eddie Trotta and John Lang of Strip Club Choppers. Everything after that was a blur....

Have you stopped shaking yet?

Thanks for all the help guys. I've decided to keep the Deuce and bought a Arlen Ness Custom. I check this forum everyday cause it's filled with info and has great people as members. Hope I can still stick around.

Those are nice bikes! I was at the AN Pleasanton shop a few weeks ago and checked them out. Is that the High Liner?

Chuck, great looking scoot!! Is it the photo or are your brake/turn signals pointing down?
Good catch. Yep. I strapped a bag on the rear and ended up loosening the tailight. It's getting fixed at the moment. Got to drop the shocks and take off the fender struts :bang:

I've put on aprox. 1100 miles so far and the bike runs like a raped ape

This is very close to the Arlen Ness Highliner. One add said it was the R & D bike for the Highliner.

HBC is the Arlen Ness Dealer that sold the bike.

124 S & S, 300 rear tire, 3 inch Open Primary and Arlen Ness front to back.

I'm in love :whoop:

I wouldn't recommend this bike to someone that was not mechanically inclined. Most dealers have a hard time with these bikes trying to fix them, it seems anyway.

I have an '04 Chopper since new and I would NOT consider it reliable. I'm currently fighting another EHC problem. Big Dog would get my vote if they would dump the EHC and use a simple, reliable wiring harness. I know they want the EHC to identify owners who abuse them during the brake-in period, but they could just add a black box for that. If I had the ear of BDM, I'd tell them to go with a simple wiring harness and add a data recorder that's not in the loop for critical engine functions.

I would have both. Tell him to buy the K9 and keep the harley.

Thing is I've just spent over $2K to fix the electrical on the Deuce.
Latest was the Stator and Regulator. Before that it was the cam position sensor. Before that it was the IEMC or something like that. With 72k miles on it I'm crossing my fingers every time I go on a overnight ride.

Good thing about this Custom. He did a bare minimum wiring build. And if it helps, he has a degree in Electrical Engineering. Looked like a real good job done to my eyes.

Very true about wrenching on these customs. I flew a Ultralight airplane for 5 years so I just do the "walkaround" every time I take the bike out. Not surprising to find loose bolts/nuts and other assorted things on my inspection.

Blue locktite is your friend!

couldn't agree more! BD has acquired most of their unreliable reputation because of the EHC (or presumed EHC) electrical problems and if they just had kept things simple and basic regarding their electrics, I have a feeling that BD would have had the reputation of being the benchmark standard by which all other customs, and motorcycles would be judged.

Did you have a hard time finding insurance? Is your bike special construction? I took a test ride on a ness highliner and it was a great ride, but it didn't fit me.

Nice lookin Ness!! Some kind of Ness open belt or other brand?
Yep. Arlen Ness front to back.

I thought I was screwed on insurance until I talked to my AAA guy. Not a problem. $400+ a year with fire and theft. What a relief. It's considered a special construction and took me 2 DMV's to get it registered. First DMV said no way without a Smog Compliance sticker on the bike. The 2nd DMV took a look at the papers I brought in, gave me a reg tag and license plate and said have a nice day :whoop: .
