Redoing stock pegs with bad rubber what do you think?

Ok, So now that the sissy bar is done, its on to another project. When I bought my 05 Chopper, the passenger pegs had all the rubber pulled off(must have swapped them with the drivers pegs) and the rubber is messed up on one of the drivers pegs due to the bike being layed down at some point. So I ended up buying a used forward control set to swap the good pegs onto my bike(still waiting for them). In the meantime I started thinking about ways to use the old pegs, I saw one member, countersunk all the holes and polished them, but other that that I haven't seen too many options.

So I started looking for some kind of rubber band/o-ring that would fit our big 1.5" pegs and came up empty handed. Then I started thinking, and after a trip to Lowes, I came up with this. What do you guys think? I'm gonna make one with 4 bands and see what looks better. The one picture is compared to how they looked before. Any other ideas out there? Hate to see an old set go to waste.

Thanks! If people like them I'll post a step by step on how I did it. Going back to Lowes tonight for some more supply's to do the other side and to see how 4 bands look.

They look great, what are the bands called that you got at Lowe's? I would think they would look good all the way across:2thumbs:

Well, that's the funny thing. I like to think of myself as a think outside the box kind of guy, I've always been able to come up with a solution to whatever problem I come across when it comes to building muscle cars and bikes. So I researched grommets, rubber washers, rubber bands, and found nothing, Then the light bulb came on, and wondered if they made a Fernco fitting for plumbing with an inside diameter that was the right size, so off the Lowes I went and found just what I was looking for. I used a Fernco that's made to fit 1 1/4-1 1/2 inch pipe and sliced it down into 3 rings. You could buy 2 and keep them almost whole to cover the whole thing but I wanted some polished aluminum showing. I forgot it was Sunday and they closed early so I never got a chance to get more, gonna slice some more rings and see what 4 look like and decide from there.

Ok now you know my dirty little secret, plumbing connector on a set of pegs, why didn't someone think of that earlier  . I'll post a how too when I get the other one done. Always willing to share my ideas if someone likes it, and it helps out a fellow member!!!

They look good. A company also sells the right size bands used for O rings on machines. I had the link but lost it.

Just went and picked up enough for 4 each. Gotta start slicing them up and Ill see what 4 looks like, you can only get 3 out of each fernco so I only got 1 to start to see if it would work. I'll take pictures of the whole process and post it up for you guys. And show the 3 vs 4 setups. Just gotta find some 1" ID bands so I can match the shifter and brake pegs. At $3.98 each, its a lot cheaper than tossing worn out pegs and finding replacements!!! Glad you guys like em

Plus the good thing is, you can take it all apart and remove the rings to polish!!!!!

Ok just finished up another peg this time with 4 bands. I like the look of the 4 better although with 3 the holes look more like a patern, with 4 it just looks like a couple of odd holes. Still think I'll stick with 4 though. What do you guys think, like 3 or 4? I took pictures along the way so I can post a step by step. Not sure if I should post it in this thread or start another? Any thoughts?

I like the looks of the 4 band. Is it rubber and stretched over the pegs? Did you have to glue the bands to stay in place? Looks great and sounds like a solution to me

I like the 4 band, and no certain members dont have to blow up the pics. If you look under search you'll find a thread on how to post the pics...

4 bands has my vote...

It is rubber and yes its stretched over the peg. Once you work them in place, which isn't too hard, they seem to stay in place without glue or anything. Time will be the true test to see how they behave.

And thank Brew, I'll look that up!! Yeah I'm gonna stick with 4 bands, looks better. I have an entire forward control set coming in the mail this week that I bought just cause it had good pegs, I'm thinking about just keeping this 4 band setup and resell the set I didn't get yet , wish I thought of this a week earlier.

Alright, I will add in my dirty little secret. I custom made a sissy bar for my bike. My wife rides about once a year, and hates feeling like she will fall off. I didnt want to shell out $400 or more for a sissy bar, so off to Lowes I went. I got a couple of stainless steel, 1/2 (I think) bars. I tried heating them to bend them and couldnt. So thinking out of the box, I made a wooden "frame" to lay them on, put them on the driveway and drove my Hummer over them about 6 times. Tried a couple more bends for good fitment. Then I made a backpad, covered it, bolted it all together and have a one of a kind sissy bar that cost all of $26.00. I grinded the tops to points, sanded and poished it all and it looks good, especially for the price. I will see if I can send a pic in a minute. I also drilled and tapped holes in the bottom to mount to the stock sissy bar mounts in the struts...
