Redline Shock Proof and Tranny issues

Thanks Raywood and the others. Spectro sounds like something to look into, but still researching and trying to find what I can. It is good to know that our Mileage Junkie has so far shown that RL Heavy SP is dependable overall.

It would be nice though if BDM would chime in and explain why the O&M on the 05-07 at least say synthetic in tranny is not recommened. May not be shit and just may be an opinion from one of the folks when they wrote that in, but if there is some real data of what is the basis of that not, it sure would be nice to get their take on it.

Hope this helps. These are the fluids I have been using from Redline:
V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof® $12.95 per Quart
V-Twin Primary Case Oil - $12.95 Per Quart
20W60HD Motorcycle Oil - $11.95 Per Quart

Thanks Synbad,

I see that use the RL V-Twin specific tranny fluid. Do not how much of a difference that is between the regular RL Heavy SP or not, but seen many in the past just with the non targeted RL verse the V-Twin.

Safe riding, I need to go put a EHC on mine and get off here. Best to all

Figure if Redline is making a distinction in their product line, might as well go with the it. Safe riding Fibersnake.

I'm afraid I can't add much to this thread except for that there were questions raised on here a while back about the Redline foaming when it gets hot. I don't think anyone could answer for sure.

I think the thing you have to consider when a manufacturer such as Baker or S&S recommend an oil, they will usually have some sort of affiliation / sponsorship agreement with them.

This along with the foaming question raised before will probably make me change over to Amsoil gear oil soon.

I'm thinking that anyone changing from Redline to something else better do a real good trans flush.
It's not good to mix these fluids.

I ordered some Amsoil extreme gear oil this morning. I will get it hot to drain easier then just pour straight through some (probably HD) oil before filling with the Amsoil. I know this probably won't get all the Redline out but unless I strip down the tranny I don't know how else you could do it. You can mix the Amsoil but it will probably degrade quicker than otherwise.

I use the Redline Transmission Fluid with Shock Proof and the Primary Fluid and love the stuff. Yup its thick and coats metal parts real well which is a good thing. As for transmission issues I can't believe the type of fluid so long as its made for a motorcycle transmission would cause a mainshaft to break. And with so many using it coincidence I would say not. My 2 cents!

Flush with transmission oil (ATF) drain it, add the ATF run it a bit so it washes down the gears, drain and it should do a good job removing it. Lee, you may need to do this a few time. When I worked for a Porsche Racing Team I used this procedure often. I you have a lift with a drop tail so the back wheel can spin a bit all the better.

I use the Redline MTL in my Primary as well as the Redline HD shockproof in my tranny. I think though I might try the Spectra fluid in my tranny on the next change since I just bought 2 quarts of it. Proably gonna have to flush it out though.

Fellas, Not to poo poo anyones comments, But with the amount you all change your Fluids, I think you all put way too much creedance into what you use, Short of Oils being contaminated with water, there is actually very little difference in most brands.

Not to say that there are not some better then others, but the minimal difference is VERY Minimal. I do agree that Synthics compared to regular fossil fuels are different, but what applies to one motor may not apply to the next.

I've got Bro's that Swear by Synthetic and Bros that won't use it. The Oil that you use is as personal a choice as the brand underwear you use, at the end of the day, Unless your Dragging or Racing, stop fucken worrying about it change the shit every 3k and get out and ride.
hell yeah Blitz!
I am still running the Redline Heavy Shock Proof in mine......and I have 3 quarts of it in the garage....I ain't changing shit......not going to worry about it.....just going to keep using it!:whoop:

Well said blitz... I was thinking similar thoughts... as I read over this... Raywood's high milage on Redline and yours breaking before the switch should be evidence to support your theory.

The fact that alot of these breaks happen with redline in them says little cause most of us here run the redline for the benifits it gives for calming down the clunk and making the unit smoother.

Call it coincidence, but shortly after switching to Redline V-Twin Trans fluid with shockproof, my bike went to the shop for trans problems. Enough for me to change to Spectro Platinum.

My feeling is that SOME guys that look to put Shock Proof in are also hard on their bikes, ride it like they stole it, which is cool. I can tell you Baker does suggest Shock Proof I have called over there myself. One thing I might add that may not have any bearing is this. Racing formulations like ShockProof are used in engines that are by their racing nature built up and broken down MORE than a typical riding bike, another words they might break the engine down after every few races, not leaving it in there till it degenerates. My end thought is that if you ride hard things break, folks that typically look for performance based options usually do ride hard, bless their soul, I know I do. I can only say that Bert Baker is a smart guy, if he says that is what he suggests I believe him, call me naive. These bikes are not indestructable, however drag starting a bike like alot of ours is tough on everything. I would say that it would be rare under normal riding to damage a Baker box with Shock or with standard stuff, but things do break. My two cents.

I switched to the shockproof last fluid change but I still may go with a lighter oil during the colder months. We tend to ride year round if the weather isnt shit and the pure shockproof tends to get very slow flowing at lower temps. I may use the the regular redline tranny fluid with shockproof in the winter and the heavy shockproof in the spring summer. And yes we tend to ride our bikes like we stole them most if not all of the time.
