Hello gang, Last weekend I dropped the dog off in Spearfish for "required service" ie computer download and getting a new speedo. So I am very interested in this whole power increase culture you guys have going on here with the dogs. So I tell the guy I am coming out, he says that he will have a package I can look at that he is doing for most of the dogs he services. I get there, and for 1g I get a .600 S&S cam installed and a before and after dyno run. I notice his hourly rate is 89.00 4.5 hours. Is this normal or should I grab the dog and run. I am not sure how he plans to get the .600 cam to work with the .585 springs that are in there.; but he says he can. Please feel free to chime in. And thats not counting the money I have to pay for the computer stuff. I am not rich nor am I looking for a better job, just ok where I am in life.

Seems a little high to me. You can get that cam off ebay from shovelheadkicker for about $75. The springs may already be rated for a .600, but I've learned from experience that you're better off with springs rated for .640 or .650. I think my valves float a little at high rpm's with that cam and stock springs. :bang:
As for the labor, there's not much to replacing the cam itself if that's all your doing. Remove pipes, rear tappet and cam cover. You will need to check your clearance on your cam once installed through the rear tappet. I had to buy another shim/cam washer to get my clearance right. I think I did it in less than 4 hours and I've never been into a motor before. I did have help from some forum members. That always helps.
Hell!! Where do you live? I'll damn near do a house call to change a cam for $1K. You might want to shop around for better prices. Ask your dealer what is he charging you for the cam. The one from EBay is new in the box (S&S).

I saw a set up with the .585 spring and a .600 cam at the stealer. sure there's no coil bind in the spring its just not designed for that much cam. I'm sure there is a factor of safety designed into it but I don't know how much.

BikersDream is extremely fair on the price considering dyno time and costs of cam... wish you were closer

You are getting a hose job,Way too much money. If you have a carb bike your springs are fine for the 600 cam.If you have fuel injection then you probably should change springs or go with the 585 cam. The cam is a easy replacement 2 hours for the pro, 3-4 hours for a rookie.IF you don't feel comfortable working on it yourself then seek out a Independent V-TWIN motorcycle shop,Those guys should be very up to date with S&S Engines. You really dont need the DYNO The 600 cam you will feel the difference........

Well today I spoke with the owner of this place, Dakota v-twin. He says he plans to deck the heads, take the cylinders from 4.976 to 4.889 at 70 bucks by a local machine shop, bring up compression, new push rods. .600 cam all gaskets and fluids; total time of about 6.5 hours to 7 hours at now 82.00 per hour and that I could forgo the dyno runs to save money. Still haven't decided what to do.

the dealers around here are higher then that hourly, but local shops are about $50.00, it sounds way to high to me for what he is doing. make sure you are out of warranty before you do any work or you will void it. OK now I am likely going to get it for this, but remember the more you change your bike the more work you will have to do, a lot of the guys on here do their own work, which if they are like me _ most of the time I enjoy, but if you are always going to have to pay someone else, it is going to get expensive.if you ride a lot not talking about bar hopping. thing like exhaust etc. you can get alway with but when you start changing thing in the engine most of the time you CAN have more problems, plus will you really us the extra power or will it be like that $400.00 DVD player you buy with all the extra features that you never us but could have paid $100.00 and gotten the same thing. good luck with what ever you do.

We have the same problem in our line of work, to me it's worth the extra if they stand behind there work opposed to someone cheaper who ends up costing you more in the long haul. Thats Baby's:zz2cents:

Well I decided to just get the work done and add bigger springs in case I want more later. I was told these guys have really good customer service, as a matter of fact the owner plans to bring the bike from Sturgis to the 90- 83 intersection; so I will save 5 hours driving time and gas so thats more than makes it a great deal. The dynos will be done, and lastly. The owner says if there is a problem in the spring when I can ride again:up: he would make it right:up:.

If I was spending that kind of cheese...I would definately get it dyno tuned at the same time...then you will be tuned up and get the full benefit of all the work you had done....I always remember the saying...what people say...and what they do are 2 different things:rolleyes:
just a thought
