Rear Tire Valve Stem Loose - Dumb Question...

Aloha All...

My boss's bike is a 2004. Not sure on the model, but it has long forks. The rear tire is a 250.

Went to fill air in the rear tire, and found the valve stem loose. Took a wrench to the nut and tried to tighten the nut down. Didn't take much effort, and just when I was about to stop, the nut slipped on the valve stem - like the tread on either the nut or valve stem is stripped - chet! Tried again with the wrench, but I alreay knew what the outcome was gonna be.

Still not sure which tread stripped - the nut or valve stem. The valve stem is treaded all the way with the same tread as the valve stem cap. A guy at a fastener speciality store told me it's pipe tread.

Here's a dumb question - I'm not sure if the tire bead can be broken from the wheel with the tire/rim still mounted on the bike. If it's possible, may be able to replace the valve stem without removing the wheel...

If it's the nut that's stripped, I'd still need to locate the nut.

Anyone have any suggestion?

go to a tire store and see if they have a new valve stem with the nut and buy one to see if the nut fits the one still in the wheel, would be a cheap way of finding out. believe you would play hell trying to break the bead with it still on the bike. don't think i would try it. even if you got the bead broke, doubt if you could get your hand inside the tire enough to replace the stem.

If the valve stem is stripped near the wheel, I would put a small (very small) spacer or o-ring and see if that works.

If you decide to pull the nut off, make sure the stem is at the top so gravity will want to keep it in there.

Stacking a small stainless washer underneath sounds likeva good idea to me.

i was wondering how i was gonna remove the nut without the stem falling in the tire [lol]...

i've been to the local auto parts stores [napa, checkers, etc.] and they all seem to have the same valve stem. even contacted a local tire specialty vendor [tech tire supply] our company deals with, and he didn't have the nut.

yeah, i've been wondering if breaking the bead is doable, and even if i was able to do that, getting a small hand inside the tire to r&r the valve may be challenging.

i'm hoping the nut [tread] is stripped - that should be an easy r&r. if it's the valve stem tread, i wanted to get another nut to see if i could use it as a jam-nut...

my last resort is to remove the wheel and send it to the local hd shop. that might be the best thing to do since i don't want the tire to go flat and cause an accident or breakdown for my boss!!!
