I see BDM runs pretty much Avon tires. Has anyone tried the Metz? I've had bikes before with Metz tires and they seemed to do well. Just curious on the Dog side of it....

If you perform a search you'll find that the Avon's (Cobra's) are junk. I would not put one on my bike if you gave it to me.

metzeler 300 was just a little bit wider than the avon 300 so it rubbed the belt. supposedly it has been re-designed so it is closer to what the avon is and not as many people are experiencing the rubbing. not near as many defects have been reported with the metzeler as have been with the new avon cobra and the avon venom is no longer in production and according to avon, they are NOT going back to the venom. do a search and read everything, then make an informed decision for yourself.

*honestly, even if avon went back to making the venom, i think it would take a long time to reach any kind of trust level. can we say they shot themselves in the foot?

I've not experienced the problems with Avons others have......until recently. Both venom and cobra rears have lasted well for me (10k+).
The problem? Front splits on a year olds tire! The Avon rep (his number is listed on here someplace) returned my call and offered to warranty the tire. It was too late. I had already installed a Metzler. I've read all the posts here and very aware of the issues.
Anyway, Avon has lost me as a customer. When my rear wears out, also putting a Metzler on.
Sorry Avon, but you did this to yourself. They were slow to react and initially tried to say the problems were insignificant.

I have just last week put a Metzler on the Dog, i had to trim the belt side to allow it to pass the belt without touching.
I had Venom's before i got 7000 kilometers only, no burnouts just hard riding.
How Raywood gets 21K miles out of a rear has got me totally stumped.
However our main roads are worse that a USA secondary roads by a very long way.
I used to be 6'1" now i am only 5'9'' but still too tall for my hair and far too big for my britches.
Will do a post when i get some miles on them.
Also late news............we now have 4 Dog's in Gladstone Queensland Australia.

"How Raywood gets 21K miles out of a rear has got me totally stumped" look at some of the picture he has posted of his rear tires after use, it will get you off the stump

Metzeler is, in my opinion, a damn good tire. Fairly soft compound, sticks well, and when it does occasionally break loose, it seems like it's in a predictable and controllable manner, and recovers quickly. The downside, though, is fast wear. I'm on my third now, only got about 6k on the first two. Personally, I prefer the peace of mind I get knowing I'll stay upright in the corners versus saving a few bucks on a longer wearing tire with the cornering characteristics of a solid wheelbarrow tire.

Ill be doing Metzlers next time around too. Unfortunately just wasted money on a damn Avon a couple of thousand miles ago.

Bought a 250 rear Cobra about 5000 miles ago alittle over a year ,still looks good. Dammm wish i would of read up on them first. Any think significant i should be looking for in a bad tire. 2711 is the number on my tire.

Search that Ceasar there are a few pictures of people's rear tires where the belt seam is separating across the tire. Also inspect both tires for cracks developing inside the tread lines. There are several photos in threads .

As stated, sidewall cracking and join seams. Inspect carefully and often.

It was a the fault of our Main Roads Department for making shitty roads.
The 300 tyre is too wide to salom between the potholes and when you hit one it jar's the shit out of you and your ride.
Hense the shorter spine...........................its a joke about the road not my spine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:roll:
