Rear Fender Strut Broken Bolts FIX! (hopefully)

I replace the 4 internal wrenching strut attach bolts twice a rear and usually dont catch atleast one in time before head pops off. I use the H-K 180 psi shoulder bolts and still rear bolts would break. Fitment of the struts was correct with no binding. Stock bolts are 3/8.

This time I had enough of drilling out old broken bolts, went to Fastenal and bought 4each, part # 1123361 7/16 x 2 cap bolts that take a 3/8 allen drive. Had to go with 2" since they had the required grip length (non threaded part) and cut down to length of bolt I had. The head is .004 smaller than the recessed hole in my struts and fit nice and tight. Drilled frame with a U size drill, tapped 7/16 UNC and drilled struts 7/16. All went perfect and looks alot nicer than before. The heads fit very nice into recessed bore that is stock size.

Time will tell I guess, I will try and get some pics up of work. I know prolly newer models that had 3 bolt struts are fine, but the 2 bolt struts I know had issues with bolts breaking.

My wife rides very seldom as she rides her own, but before any wise cracks,, she is 135 lbs. I think just road bumps, potholes, vibrations, was the culprit.

Laterzzzz
