Rear brake getting hot

I'm concerned about my rear brake. I just rode a little 10 or 12 mile quick loop and when I got home my exhaust was making the noise it makes when it cools down but I heard something similar coming from the left side. I looked down at the brake and the rotor was blued a bit from getting so hot and it was what was making the noise. It is really confusing because I can push the bike back and forth and such and the rear brake is not even rubbing. The brake feels to be working fine. Anyone have a similar issue or have any ideas?

With pushing the bike backwards or forwards isn't really going to tell you much in my opinion. Try to get yourself a lift to get the back tire off of the ground and start looking around that way.

First thing to try - When you ride you could be unknowingly pressing the brake lever with your foot. Next time you ride make a conscious effort to keep your foot off the brake peg. I ride with my toe underneath the brake peg.

If that makes no difference then check the main spring return on the foot lever master cylinder. The lever should return back after release. Next check the rear caliper for proper pad retraction after letting up on the brake pedal. The rear tire should spin with minimal drag.

Sounds like the first I mentioned.

Just took the same quick loop and it may have been operator error as Oscar suggested :D

It wasn't near as hot as it was earlier. Based on my accurately calibrated hand it seemed to be about the same as the front. It was interesting that both the front and back rotor were both tinking a bit as they cooled down. I've never noticed that before. Later on tonight I'll put it up on the lift and check it out good. Hopefully I'm OK. I think so now.

For what it's worth, there was this time in band camp...

I had over filled the master cylinder, and it actually locked up the rear brake. Had to crack the banjo and bleed off some fluid.

I've also seen "retraction" problems on older bikes that have been around for a while. Some dis-assembly and thorough cleaning, sometimes new parts. Wouldn't expect to see that on a bike as new as yours though.

For what it's worth...
my rear brake nearly locked up on me last summer right after I bought it. There is an adjustment nut inside the plunger on the master cylinder that vibrated loose from the Loctite & actually tightened up my brake pedal, causing constant pressure on my rear brakes.
After the bike handling like I was towing a Buick & the hot smell of brake pads, I pulled over & noticed my rear rotor was glowing. My pads had all but disintegrated, but not before they ate up my PM calipers.... all in a day's ride!
