so I went to change my tire after my trip and the bearings. In my opinion a 6205 bearing is a 6205. So I beat the old ones out and the new ones in and went to put the wheel back together and the axel would not fit thru the new bearings.

So I straped that bitch to the lathe and took a couple 1000ths off but I determined that the thing was a little bent.

Really weird how even though it was bent it would not go thru the ID of the bearing.

Tried to order a new one from Nelson but I guess he is on extended leave:spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank:

Yeah, I went through that bearing thing with my front tire. Just got in the three bearings for the rear from my dealer who sends them to me. Figure I will change them out since my tire was replaced in Daytona. Have well over 10,000 miles on them.
Pulled one of the seals and just as my front set there wasn't much grease in them so advise all of you to repack them before having them pressed in.

Standard 6205's have a 25mm I.D., the BD axle shaft is 25.4mm or 1 inch. When I changed mine out, I ditched the cheap Chinese made bearings that came from the factory and replaced them with:

Timken/Fafnir 205KDD2

I paid $23.73 each

i have a spare rear axle in hand.

its just shy of an inch. .997 x 13.25

ordered for my 250 rear but cant remember if it was too long or short. never sent it back.

I am looking in a drag book with bearings. It shows Timken but says they are for HD OEM #9052. IS this the correct one for the front and rear axel?

I replaced my rear axle (250 tire) due to bearing failure as well. I changed out my wheels so I didn't buy the bearings but I did get the axle from BDM

Not sure if re-packing them is a good idea. Bearings that have seals like the ones we have on our bikes were not really designed to be serviceable. For one, they lack a bleed hole for excess grease to escape. Putting too much grease is just as bad as having too little. Conical bearings like axle bearings on cars and whatnot are serviceable as excess grease has a place to go once the bearing starts spinning, thus avoiding an issue with over lubrication. You can do what you want, but axle bearings on our bikes are a pretty vital component that needs to work properly for many miles. This is one part that should not require periodic servicing at all. A quality bearing should last much longer (if installed properly) than the ones that failed on my bike. I did some digging into the origin of the bearings that are installed from the factory. They are "special" bearings made specifically for BD. They are also supposedly from China and the ABEC rating is unknown as well as the type of grease used, etc. This information was given to me from the company I purchased my bearings from. Granted, they could have given me biased information just to get a sale, but they were not trying to push the type of bearing that I went with, so I don't think they were trying to get me to buy from them. I have worked with these people numerous times over the years and the sales staff there is pretty stand up.
Do what you want, grease them and try to save a few dollars, I wouldn't, I didn't, and I would advise anyone to do the same as I. If these bearings have a catastrophic failure, they could potentially destroy the hubs that they are pressed into as well as damage the axle shaft that goes through them.

What costs more money, three bearings from a reputable manufacturer, or a wheel hub (or two), or rear axle and the asspain of trying to take it all apart.

Hey, you already have it apart. There are two ways to do a job, the right way and the wrong way, you decide.

I did what Loafington suggested in another thread on this...

The original bearing I removed, 6205RS 16 is a one inch bearing. The 16 at the end stands for 16/ 16ths or 1 inch. Being that it is a no brand bearing I chose the route you did and ordered 3 Timken/Fafnir 205KDD2. Yea, screw China under my ass too. The 2 at the end of a bearing number represents it has been modified in "some" way. Be it the race or whatever. The Timken/Fafnir 205KDD2 is no doubt a quality bearing and I gave 20.00 a piece for them. As we measured the shaft itself, the values were all over the place depending where it was measure. They were surprised as well.

I asked about opening the seal and applying extra grease and was advised not to do that. The extra grease will cause the bearing to heat up more thus causing premature failure also. Appears it is a science to the amount that is applied for a particular bearing.

You are correct. Too much grease causes increased heat build-up which can lead to premature bearing failure. The seals that are installed are designed to keep practically everything out. Shielded bearings keep out a lot of shit but not as much as sealed. The degree of shit that our bikes see falls well into the category for using a shielded bearing if one wishes to do so. If you are blasting high pressure water directly at the shield on a bearing, water could get by the shield and into the bearing. I know I do not do that, so going with a shielded bearing was fine by me.

look these bearings are a 6205 standard bearing. 1 inch is one inch my axel would not fit tru the new bearings.. I said witf milled the shaft and I am now waiting the new one ..................but not for long

Oh that roller bearing that was mentioned above is NOT THE RIGHT ONE. these are sealed bearings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raywood, any trouble getting the seal back into the bearing after packing more grease into the new ones?
No, they pop right off very easily. I posted pictures on my front wheel thread where I pulled the seals on two bearings and one had grease in it and the other was practilly dry.
So I filled them up. I've now been through 4 bearing changes and have not had an issue wiith heat build up. If it expands it would just leaks out cause the seals are no sealed as you would think it means.

I just got 3 more to change out the rears as I've done a lot of miles this year and have over 10,000 miles on the current set alone. I'll post pics of the old ones when I get them out and see if they still have the grease in them.

As many bearings as I go through I'll just keep using these ones rather than spend $75 for three bearings just for the rear!

As Ray said... they aren't so much sealed as covered.

Pop off the dirt cover like below


Then the "seal" and find it like this


I added some mobil 1 grease to mine...


Once you pop the seal back in... it gets ride of the excess

A 6205 has an inner diameter of 25mm. Your axle is not 25mm, it is 1 inch or 25.4mm. So if you went and got a standard off the shelf non modified or non special application 6205, it will not fit. The outer diameter and thickness are spot on, the inner diameter of a standard 6205 bearing sealed, shielded or otherwise, will not work with a standard BD rear axle.
