Really Weird

I had the weirdest thing happen the other day. was riding down the road and all of a sudden the chopper just quit. No lights, and the speedo was stuck on 50. Pulled off the road, turned the key off then back on and it started right up. Rode another 60 miles no problems. I had the
ehc replaced 6 days before all this happened. Took another ride a little later, and the same thing happened. Battery is good with good connections. Any takers?

Do you have a folding tag bracket? If it keeps happening chances are the symptoms will change or worsen. Who installed the EHC? Do not ever remove the harness while the battery is connected. You have a ground issue I believe. If no folding bracket then try to disconect the neutral switch from the plug in and ride. If solves then replace. If not you could have the smallest of holes in the insulation of any wire that will cause what your having. I found BB sized rub through hole in a wire(so hard to spot) from my turn signal that caused me alot of issues. Also look under the fender to make sure you did not rub the tire on the underside and cause damage to the wires that are routedd there. Just loosten the strut arm and lift up the fender to look:)

thanks for the heads up. I do not have a folding tag bracket. Where does the neutral switch plug in at?

I had the same problem this spring... after having the EHC replaced.... if it happens again BEFORE you cycle the key remove your seat and see if all the lights are on... they probably will be ..

Now... through my conversations with Ohmster the EHC is loosing power for like 22 ms... possibly the Ign switch... sending the EHC into bootloader mode and locking up.
However i have yet to install the ign key/cylinder that BDM sent me to remedy the problem.... all i have done is remove this resistor that was an early 05 service bulletin repair..

This resistor is no longer needed because it is built into the new EHC...
so give it a try.... Good luck. John
And check out my threads. Mostly the second page's with my responses from Ohmster..

I believe part of what N8KAM is discussing is the old ignition switches where the key or tumblers would be loose and that would send the bike into protection mode and you would then have to recycle the key to reset the EHC. Good point could be the problem.

The Nuetral switch is on the right side top of the transmission. It has one screw holding it in place and the wire that comes out and plugs into the wire coming down from the EHC in front of the back fender. Did you check under fender for rub damage? And who installed the EHC? If not done perfect it will cause you problems.

thanks for all the help. The dealer here installed the EHC. As Ray says no wires under fender. I am assuming it will eventually take out the EHC if problem not found?

There has been some issues in the past that were found to be the ignition switch also. I know the EHC is always blamed but I truly believe that most of the time it's not the problem.
If you have a key ring full of keys and stuff then that may be the issue also.
Worth a check.

I am with you Ray .. the EHC is a solid-state device, low voltage and protected pretty well against shorts. Issues I bet come mostly from adding something, bad connections ..etc. cleaning the connectors using a good contact spray followed by die-electric grease to waterproof should solve quite a few problems.

Good to know Ray, didn't know that about the 05's, good change. I checked out all you photo's. Nice. Hope to get in on the fun in the upcoming spring. God, already looking forward to next summer.

I think Kam is going to be right.

but also check to be sure the the ehc connections are packed with dielectric grease
