On a phone pole, 10,000 people were called. From Florida to the Midwest all the way to California. All over the United States. Of the 10,000 people 80% used Dawn or another dish water soap to wash there car, truck and or Motorcycle! I was floored!!!!!!!!! The article went on to say what I already knew but damn! 80% of the people paid big money for there car and are ruining them!

For those who do not know: Daun cuts grease! We have all seen there commercial! But it's just not veggie grease or animal grease residue. This product does not know the differance in veggie grease and Petrolium grease. Ever wonder what is used to clean cruise oil off animals and birds after an oil spill??? The answer: DAWN!!!! When you wash your car it gets in the U- joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, everywhere there is a grease able joint this crap is causing you massive pre-wear!! On bikes, those wheel bearings and it doesn't help your oil seals very much either, they have linked Dawn to pre-break down on rubber oil seals! Now let's talk paint! This shit takes off wax! Yes most car wax is a Petrolium base product! Will break down some clear coats. Causes premature rusting on chrome! Will dull billet aluminum! This stuff should ONLY be used in the sink or as a degreaser when and only on parts you want decreased! I use Wizard car wash. Turtle was has a good car wash solution. Car wash detergent is NOT a degreaser. It is VERY mild liquid soap! It has no degreaser in it and it will not harm paint! Think of it this way, would you use Lava soap on your face? Hell no, there are diffrent soaps for different jobs! Also, next time your at the grocery store go look at the Dawn soaps, notice the bottles with the cruise oil covered animals on them, and think what damage this shit will do if it gets your grease!

One of the old ones.
This is good stuff here, Johnathon. I frankly never thought of something as innocent as dish washing detergent damaging my bike...happily, I bought a half gallon of carwash liqiuid some time back and just use that to wash vehicles.
It would be interesting to run a poll and see how often these guys actually wash their bikes....I rarely wash mine with water..I have several ways to keep it clean. I use a waterless spray wash a forum member recommended, and of course I have several types of detail products like Stripper Juice, S-100, etc.

I never use water, only Stripper Juice. But you are correct, and I use Dawn on wildlife all the time. I've cleaned glue from a glue trap off a hummingbird with it and bathe animals that come to me with fleas and ticks on them.

I use dawn to wash cars right before I wax it to get help get some of the road grim off the side of the car, then I use kerosine to clean the rest of the tar off. Years ago I used Zaino wax and they recommended washing car with dawn prior to waxing to remove any existing wax.

It is unbelievable how much shit (toxins) is in dish washing liquid and some people do not rinse dishes after washing them!
Dish washing liquid is also alkaline and will promote corrosion.

Unless you're soaking bearings in Dawn I wouldn't be concerned. I have been using it for 20 years to wash wax build up (Carnauba) off show cars and bikes with absolutely no ill effects. It's the best way to strip wax off and is not going to harm paint or anything else when diluted with water. Car washes will not remove wax buildup. I use it on billet in solution and rinse off with no ill effects over many years.
