Question, if I was to go with the Harley type rewire and swap out the handlebar and controls couldn't I just use a kit like this to wire the bike with and eliminate the stock ehc? Wiring Sytem PLUS or this one http://www.ultimaproducts.com/wiringsystemleds.html

Yes. Thunderheart also makes a nice kit for around $300 and some have actually still used the stock switches.
The only thing extra you gotta do to move to HD controls is mod the handle bars to accept the Harley controls. the BD handlebars are thicker than HD.

chacha was the external ignition module a issue when you did your rewire? My k9 is a 2006 and it has the ign module out of the cam chest and right there were the ehc is. Did you also go back to Harley style ign? or anyone else that might have done this type of rewire.
